Author Topic: stupid bolts on the water pump (Read 6478 times)

so my water pump went on the club drive the other day. i was still able to do about half the 5 hour drive, and i had a water pump waiting for me when i got home. so i set to work today to pull it out, got all but 3 bolts out, then i look and see an allen key and i think "thats strange..." so i wip out a 6mm allen key and pop it in there. it has a little flex and then shears off with the end stuck in the bolt. i can't pull it out of the nut, and i can't get the nut out. i need my car tomorrow afternoon, and im not really sure what to do now... anyone got any bright ideas for me?

edit: i forgot to mention it was a craftsmen prof. key, and i'v tried drilling it with a small bit and it just snapped like a tooth pick. i tried low and high rpm's before it broke, and it only made a small pin prick in the key.

well after some consideration im going to weld a piece of metal onto it and pull it out. heat it up and see if i can't get it to come out. ill let you guys know how i fare.

yay! so i figured what the hell its still warm out, i can get enough light with a flashlight. so i got her welded up and got the bolt out. a few light taps strategicly lossend the pump and its out now.

Consider yourself lucky that your waterpump job didnt end up as badly as mine.

Moral of the story, change your coolant regularly kids. The previous owner of my car didnt.

I was fortunate enough to not have any issues with the water pump R&Rs when I had to perform them. I was thankful as I replaced mine in the parking lot at night with a flash light last winter. NO FUN at all.

hahaha i know... i used some heat, and slight tapping of the hammer in all directions and it loosened it up. it was stuck in there pretty good at the start... but it came out whole. the previous mechanic didn't use anti sieze on the bolts... moral of the story? do it yourself.

alright so new problem. i did all this work because the temp wasn't rising above the 1/4 mark. so i replaced the water pump and T-stat. now i took it out and beat the shit out of it for about 30 min and it only made it a hair above the blue mark. am i just needing to make more power so it runs hotter

or what should i do?

Are you sure the temp guage is functioning correctly? (ie. grounding nut on insturment cluster)

yeah it works fine. its steady, works properly. my fan didn't even get a chance to kick in on the medium seetting which should have been about 1/4 way up on the temp guage. (it has its own temperature unit)

Yeah, has to be T-Stat. You are using the 88C one, right? That is the 'proper' one.

well it had an 88c one, but they gave me a 79.5 C one, which puzzled me, but thats what showed up when he looked up the car.
