Clutch change - What parts do I need?
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:32:40 AM »
Hi.

I'm going to change the clutch on my E30 318is and wanted to know what people would recommend changing at the same time, both relate to the clutch / flywheel and any other parts that would be convenient to change.

So far I've been told to change:

Clutch
Prop center bearing

What else would you advise?

I've got the general 3-series haynes manual (although it doesn't cover the 318is specifically) but it doesn't give a list of parts or suggestions.

Thanks.

If you wanted to you could change to a lighter flywheel for a sportier feel.

The E30 Bentley Guide is really the best repair guide, but doesn't cover the M42 engine.  The M42 engine is covered in the E36 Bentley Guide.  Kinda stinks that you need two manuals.

Guibo, rear engine seal, front/rear/shifter tranny seals.  Tranny mounts.  Shifter cups.  Clutch slave cyl.

There's a lot you can do all at once under there.

Good call on the tranny seals, Dave. How hard are those to do / do they need special tools?

systemshock, off the top of my head, I would say that you need:
- Pilot bearing
- Pressure plate
- Clutch disc
- Throw out bearing
- Pivot arm
- Pivot pin
- Pivot arm retaining spring
- 8 new flywheel bolts (if you are removing the flywheel to have it resurfaced)

If you want to save a little money, I have a slave cylinder rebuild kit that I'll part with for $15 shipped. I ended up getting a new one with my new engine. Other misc stuff that comes to mind:
- Driveshaft center support bearing/bushing
- Fresh tranny fluid
- Rear engine seal housing gasket

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?

Don't forget the exhaust manifold outlet gasket. I would also suggest replacing the slave cylinder hose at the same time if doing the slave cyl. If you really want to be spot on with your work you can change the pressure plate bolts at the same time. Hope you don't think of something we forgot once you get under there!

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful. It's not been very well cared for so I'm trying to do as much as I can to make it better.

@bmwman91 - Thanks for the offer but I live in the UK so the shipping would be more expensive than getting a slave cylinder here.
