New oem catback exhaust is rattling like crazy
« on: December 03, 2006, 07:02:36 PM »
I just installed a new OEM catback exhaust with the OEM mounting kit, the muffler section is rattling like crazy at certain RPMs. I have jacked it up and double checked that everything is tight and I can't see where it is rattling with the car jacked up.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to combat this?

It's probably the baffles inside the muffler. After markets are $200 POS's. I went through two of them in three years. OEM is $400-$500. I put an Eberspaecher rear muffler on from BMAParts. The muffler alone was $200 and twice as heavy as the after market one but it doesn't rattle. The clamp BMW sells is also POS. Have it welded.
If yours is a BMW part it's defective. If it's after market it's defective. Return it at once.

See, it depends upon who you talk to.  My oem (from the dealer) muffler is fine.  My clamp is fine.  I've used it to swap to the supertrapp and back to the oem muffler with no problems (I replaced all bolts with stainless steel, so they will come off).  Is the muffler resting against the bodywork?  If so, it may be an installation issue.  If not, then something is wrong, and once you figure out what, you can return it or get it fixed.

Then again, we are just two opinions.  Two points of data is not enough to make sweeping generalizations.

I spend some time finding the rattle on my wife's Outback, using various things to beat on the system until I found the problem.  You may have to get below the car and do the same.

i had the same problem... the thing is this ... exactly after the manifld , is the connection of the exhaust.. a litle further more is the first exhaust holder to the chassis...that one is broken someware and between 1000 and 3000 rpm is makes a loud noise like a chainsaw...even if you got new bolds if you don't weld it with the exhaust it will still do noise... i have weld it and it has never ( 10000 kilometers ) made noise again...
steer with the rear !!!

Mine has never made noise, but I bought it with 190,000 miles and only have 233,000 miles on, so only 43,000 miles (which is what, about 70,000 km)?

Of course, I replaced the parts and bolts with new stuff about 200,000 miles, so about 50,000 km ago...

The first connection, I presume you are talking about the connection to the transmission?  New ones aren't that expensive.  Still, get under there and push and pull and hit (with a rubber hammer, or perhaps your arm) and see if you can find the rattle.

You CAN weld it.  It'll make it harder to remove, perhaps.  Since I don't have a welder, I went the other way.

So I figured out it is the side of the muffler clamp banging into the spare tire well. I have rigged it so it won't be as obnoxious but I don't see how it can be properly addressed with the stock hardware.

I think I am going to wait until spring and have a Dynomax muffler welded in place.

Loosen the rear clamps and the center joint so you can rotate and move the muffler until it clears. I had to do mine twice to get it right. I put a piece of wood in there to keep it wedged where I wanted it and then re tightened the center connection and then the rear clamps.

I believe it s the cone,  thats the way they call it arround here, i changed mine a couple of weeks ago, it seals the connection of the exhaust with the engine, its pretty cheap though but does a quite anoying noise and u may noticed a reduction in torque:(, anyway I ll be glad if I helped, I payed arround 10 euros this means about 13 dollars. (sorry about my english)
