When I first got my car, you could pull on the hood release, and the hood would pop up nicely. now it seems it does not want to pop up. it will still open but you have to pull it up. I have lubricated all the spots that seemed relevant, it did help a little, but not completely. I dont see an adjustment for it so I guess the hood shock is dead, ay? how strong are these things, and if I take it off will I be rewarded by having the hood come down and hit me in the head even:rolleyes:

I could be way off, but isnt the hood "pop" a function of a the spring part of the release mech at the front of the car?

Mine had same prob... I totally dismantled mech behind rad bracket cleaned, lubed and put back together... PRESTO
Pretty sure the hood shock only holds the hood up when open and has nothing to do with popping action
'cause my other e30 "pop"'s great but the hood will fall on my head if bumped

after a more comprehensive cleaning and lubrication of the latch that does seem to have fixed it, thanks folks.

Replace the hood shock. New units give a solid pop and hold the hood firmly. I ordered a cheap on off Pelican, but the of the shock bent and now the hood closes at a weird angle, so maybe try another brand. If you don't use a shock, the hood will fall shut, unless you park downhill all the time.

PB Blaster and an aerosol can of white grease. I swear, it'll fix most any lazy mechanical component. Hinges, latches, cables, windows, etc.

I use the same combo! Works as intended.

found out my problem was the bolt attached to the hood shock was too tight...then ripped the bracket off halfway
