and bolts actually.
i'm about to replace my head pretty soon.
as soon as i figure how much parts i need for my upper timing case and thermostat housing though..

i've been skimming through realoem and bmwfans. but upon checking two diagrams for the upper timing case.. i can't seem to decipher how much bolts i needed and which ones really. real oem shows the part number i need and the updated part number that replaced it as well. (unlike bmwfans.. :mad:) but when i look at this diagram.. for part number 5.. it doesn't really say how many i need. as opposed to this diagram's #5.. they seem to be in the same spot too me.. but obviously have different part numbers..

i'm just trying to figure out what and how much bolts i need for the upper timing case housing and thermostat housing.

this is probably so simple right for people but my brain is running low after writing several papers for Psychology. T_T

Upper TC cover: 11 x M6x35 bolts
T-Stat housing: 4 x M6x30 bolts

As for the timing case itself, I can't remember. It uses like 5 or 6 different ones. Are you replacing existing ones, or did you lose them? There isn't really any reason to replace the bolts.

Oh, and I would get a M6x1 helicoil / thread repair kit. At the very least, the valve cover threads in the head strip. I had a couple of threads in the timing case & front of the head go too, and thread repair was needed.

i just realized right now that i was looking at two irrelevant diagrams. i just needed the first diagram to look at since i just needed the upper tc bolts and the thermostat bolts.
replacing them seemed to be a must from what i remember when i was messing with them the last time. one of them even snapped inside the timing case..
i think my timing case itself is stripped. crap.
and yeah one of the vc threads were stripped on my old head.

For the record, masking off the whole head is probably unnecessary. If you go slowly you shouldn't spill any metal chips. Or, have a partner hold a shop vac hose where you are working to suck up the chips as they are produced.

i don't plan on reusing the head so i'm not worrying too much about it. i'm crossing my fingers that it'll be sometime before i have to do such. :p

on a side note i had to order a new screw cap plug for my timing chain tensioner.
the damn thing got rounded. and now i don't really know how to take it off. ughh
