Just Picked Up 1994 318i with only 98,000
« on: July 15, 2011, 01:18:47 PM »
I just picked up a 1994 318i with 98,000 miles. The only  problem need a head gasket, I will start working on it today. I think I got a good deal, has new brakes and rotors, belts, therostat, etc. The inside of the car is like new. I paid 1100. What do you think?

Make sure you get that head checked thoroughly for straightness and flatness.  If it's cracked or warped the only way to fix it is to get it machined or replaced.  Pressure test the cooling system while you're at it...the rad, water pump, profile gasket and intake preheating system are all pretty weak.

Even if it does have a cracked head it still sounds like a good deal.

I had the Head repaired, Crack in the number 2 Cylinder. Put engine back together, the car still over heats, I think I have air in the system. I will try bleeding more today. Any help would be great...

What exactly do you mean by the above....?
Was the Head Cracked, the block or the Piston..?
And how exactly did you repair?

Right by Number 2 cylinder there is a large coolant channel that is very prone to cracking on the M42 head...

read this.

Ran, is your fan clutch good? have you tested it?

did you have your head pressure checked after it was "repaired" ?

did you pressure check your coolant system before filling the system?

when you bled the system, did you have someone bring the car to around 1500rpm, to get the system up to close to full operating pressure?

I went though this same nightmare you are going though about 6 months ago.. My head had 2 cracks.. and i also had a bad fan clutch...
