Weird problem
« on: September 27, 2006, 10:20:06 PM »
Hi

I am having a strange problem with my car ('91 318iS).  I got gas one night and on my way home I heard a noise, didn't really think anything of it at the time, anyway over the next couple days, my car started to jerk a lot while driving and my check engine light would flash.  I thought maybe it was just some bad gas so I put some gas treatment in and it helped out alot but only for a day.

Anyhow, now the jerking is really bad to where I can't even drive it.  Also, when my car idles, sometimes it will drop the rpms really low and almost die but then it comes back up to normal.  Sometimes it will just die though.

Anyone have a guess to what could be causing this?

turn the key to the on possition and push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and let it back out 6 or 8 times, i forget how many it is... do it fairly fast and then the light will blink out the codes for you.

I gave that a try and my engine light blinked out "1288" but I did not see that code in the list?

Washed your engine bay recently? Water in the spark plug wells will cause this (among other things).

Filter has a few thousand miles on it.  The pump...probably original.  I have though it might be the pump...but it seems too intermittent to be that.  Who knows.

I got my problem fixed.  It turned out that 3 of my coil packs were bad, 2 were leaking spark and 1 was cracked.
