Welcome, grasshopper.  Sounds like you got a great deal.  The e36 is twice the car that the e30 is, as there is twice as much to break.:D

Just kidding (mostly).  You'll learn a lot on here.  The car will demand it from you.  I'm on the other side of PA, but my lil' red e30 spends a lot of time in Allentown, Carbondale, Scranton, Lancaster and eastern PA towns.

First off, I'd do a stomp test to get some codes.

Secondly, the early e36 had some trouble with flooded computers, so check the drain in the passenger firewall to be sure it's not plugged.  Google "wet DME" for the horror stories you'll be avoiding.

Third, make sure the ignition lock is in good shape and that the EWS antenna loop (round the key lock) stays put right there.  Otherwise the car won't start.

Finally, I'd also replace a few components just to make sure they don't fail.  The three primary relays (main, O2 and fuel pump) are fairly cheap at Pelican Parts, BMA, etc.  Keep the current relays as spares.  Also be sure to use the link at the top right, helps pay the bills 'round here.

One more thing.  Did you get any records for your car from the previous owner?  If he went to BMW dealers you can request the records for free.

Take your title down to your local BMW dealer with you, go to the service desk & ask them to run a complete mechanical history of the car.  You'll need to know when the profile gasket was replaced, if the chain tensioner was updated, if all service recalls were performed and you can even learn the day when your car was assembled.

If you're really into details, you can pull up the rear bench seat & look on the bottom of it for the option sheet.  It'll list the original options & codes, the date of production, paint codes, etc.

For the CL ad?  Yep.  That's a good deal, you talked him down over $600...

Another nice thing being over your way is the number of scrap cars that people are parting out.  Pittsburgh has less than half the market for used cars, so prices tend to be higher here.  CL is a great place for parts, if you take your time & wait for the right deals to come by.

If you need a parts car...http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/2073192046.html  $800 but it sounds like it'll need some work.  I was very tempted to add an e36 to my fleet.
