idle problems
« on: October 24, 2010, 06:54:24 PM »
I have a 91 318ic that will crank, but fights to stay on unleass i give it gas i can get it to rev about 4000 rpms, then l take my foot off gas it will idle perfect at about 700rpms. as soon as I tap gas it stalls to the point it wants to shut off. I have replaced the fuel filter, new plugs, the vacuum lines. i was thinking the fuel pressure reg or fuel pump, it may not be pushing out the right volume. Anyone have any ideas or had this happen to them.

I'd check the AFM & wires.  Should have a nice smooth resistance curve on pins 1 & 2 IIRC.  I can get you the full test diag if you like.

Get the codes too - let us know what a stomp test tells you.

like the other said,  I had the same thing happen and it turned out to be my ignition coil.  One was bad.
