disabling power steering
« on: October 17, 2010, 07:59:28 PM »
PS pump is shot so I removed the belt. Steering is tight but manageable & preferable for autocrossing. I really don't need it & could stand to lose some weight (the car, not me). Should i remove entire PS system...pump, resevoir, plug hoses, etc? Any issues, problems deleting this system? Thanks

I've removed the belt on mine too.  No problems, unless you mind a little upper-body workout whilst parallel parking.

I made sure to drain the rack so I wasn't pushing fluid around.  I'll get to pulling the rest of the P/S system one of these days.

There was a member with some nice alu blanking plate for the steering rack fitting.  That'd be nice.

I removed everything including the the bits inside the rack and it seem to lighten up the steering effort as opposed to just removing the belt

yep, remove it all.  drain the rack and plug it to keep dirt/water out.  You can lose like 15-20 lbs and with no fluid steering will be easier.
