I have done it on jack stands....It was sort of a bitch....Worst part is probably the starter bolts... Beyond that pretty easy....Not sure how many miles, but you may want to also change your Flex Disc (guibo) and carrier bearing while it is all apart...Also check your tranny bushings...

Also agree with the guibo and center carrier bearing.
Buy exhaust header to front pipe bolts and gasket.
If the trans leaks do the rear seal and shifter seal.
If there is oil from the rear main seal do it.
I have found the best way to reinstall the trans is to get 2 or 3 studs and put them in back of the block. Let them support the weight - LOL they don't know any better. Those and a clutch alignment tool make it easy.  
Obviously what folks are saying is there's no better time to do that other stuff while the trans is out. I learned the hard way by needing a throw out bearing and just replacing it. Then, a year later, I got an opportunity to take all that stuff out again.
I have access to a lift and a complete fab shop from my racing days. I use it when I need to get back on the road quick. Still, sometimes I just jack it up in the driveway and use carpet remnants to lay on. Then you can pause, look up at the sky, win races, fantasize about whatever .......

while your transmission is out, a GREAT time to do the lower and upper oil pans and gaskets! Little silicone over those oil pan bolts too!

indeed! that silicone gasket i made for the lower oil pan, worked better than the gasket that was leaking small amounts of oil. No drips anymore..

And also to keep the thread on topic...if you've got access to a lift and all the tools to get it done...DO IT

oo shit... i never come to m42club. but yes it was a ride. but it got done. 11hrs no other help besides Bentley. only thing i should have done that i didn;t do was machine the flywheel. my next project is rear brakes. they should be in by tuesday. ATE rotors and pagid pads. i have zimmermann rotors and P-pads in front. and i just tinted my windows 5% around.
