Threw out the booring M40 and installed a E36 M42 engine :)

-88 E30 325i M50 6spd turbo, 764whp
-89 E30 318i M42, 140hp COP conv. (E36 engine + gearbox, 3.73 188 diff)
-90 E30 318is M42 turbo, 240whp (sold)

so you used the e36 tranny also? what front driveshaft did you use, the one from the e36?

this swap has been tempting the hell out of me, it'd REALLY complement my ITB setup, but i just bought a clutch for the e30-m42 tranny, so probably not happening.

Yes, E36 tranny. I used the standard E30 318i M40 drive shaft, had to modify the support mount in the middle and remove the big nut at the splines so i could get it short enough.
And i had to shorten the lower shift linkage like 1cm as well.

U can use the E30 tranny but the E36 M42 uses the 15mm pilot bearing in the crank so u will have to put a 12mm bearing in it with the E30 tranny. (pretty easy though)

Isnt the clutch the same? If its not just use the new clutch and E30 tranny ;)

My e30 M42 was overheated and has brutal lifter noise (still relatively strong though) so I'm thinking of swapping it with an e36 M42 (good compression but has a front crank oil leak).

Can you give me an overview of the 'hard stuff' or a link to where the job has already been posted?

U have to use the E36 M42 engine harness and ECU, just cut in some of the wires at the round contact next to the fuse box and thats it :)
