e-brake rebuild

Just out of curiosity, I've been chasing a wierd clunk and have replaced virtually the entire suspension (and I mean everything).  Just wondering, is there anything in the e-brake setup that can go and cause strange noises, such as a bad spring causing sudden/delayed release while driving.

Anyway, the car has 250k on it and I'm guessing the e-brake has never been touched, so its probably about time to pull the rear disks and take a look.  Has anyone done this - what's needed?

The ebrake has 4 springs and two shoes per wheel.  If a shoe cracked or a spring broke, that could cause noise and/or the shoes to stick to the wheel.  It seems to me, however, that a sticky caliper is more likely to cause "sudden/delayed release while driving."  You have to remove the caliper, then the rotor before you can get to the ebrake, so might as well check the caliper first.
