my e30 m42 318is bit the dust , timing chain broke, i was speeding pass a semi 80 mph. I found a 1992 e36 318, would anyone know if this engine would drop in our car without too much difficulty?

I think they're a straight drop-in, except you'll have to swap the intake manifolds. This has come up before, someone will chime in with a more positive answer.

Aside from the addition of the DISA intake manifold and knock sensors, they're identical. Put your manifold on it and leave the knock sensors unplugged (or remove them); everything else is the same.

You'll need the E30 oil pans also.

so, i would keep the oil pans from original m42 engine, and place them on new engine, good tip, also, and no knock sensors are needed, and manifolds are different . this was great help. thanx for tips.

I think the exhaust manifold is slightly different. Strip your existing engine.
