It like it, but man did he do a lot of upgrades on that BMW. I would love to put a turbo on my M42, but with it having over 200,000 miles on it I know the turbo would eventually ruin my engine's life span.
everything up until august was done while I was deployed to Iraq- one of the few good things about going overseas is the money that usually goes to cost-of-living can be reallocated elsewhere. getting to check in with Robert @ e30motorwerks and see the progress on the car was a big morale-booster.
I have a turbo manifold from Otis (good & tight), a smallish t3 and about 90% of what I need to get the car turbo'd sitting in storage. one of the things that's great about the m42 is that it saw development and use in the 3-series for quite a while after it's introduction- so if my high-mileage block does give out, then I will just have to cry into a beer and then go find a low-mileage m44 block from a junkyard, because it is my choice to look at it less as an engine failure and more as an opportunity to upgrade

as I've made changes to the car's setup since getting home I have thought quite a bit about how to make sure the turbo setup has the quick-spooling behavior of a rally car- so I am not planning on a light flywheel, but I am considering using a water-air IC rather than the front-mount I already have. if I were to keep the car naturally-aspirated, then reground cams, an aluminum flywheel, and an e36 tranny with a 1:1 5th would be a no-brainer because the ITBs certainly do shift the fat part of the power curve up the rpm range, much the same way hotter cams would.
anyway, yeah, stay tuned. I can't promise progress will happen quickly because I am back to being a college student again, but it will happen.
