It like it, but man did he do a lot of upgrades on that BMW.  I would love to put a turbo on my M42, but with it having over 200,000 miles on it I know the turbo would eventually ruin my engine's life span.

Id love to go the ITB cammed route with an aluminum flywheel, but I am not sure how it would feel.....

everything up until august was done while I was deployed to Iraq- one of the few good things about going overseas is the money that usually goes to cost-of-living can be reallocated elsewhere. getting to check in with Robert @ e30motorwerks and see the progress on the car was a big morale-booster.

I have a turbo manifold from Otis (good & tight), a smallish t3 and about 90% of what I need to get the car turbo'd sitting in storage. one of the things that's great about the m42 is that it saw development and use in the 3-series for quite a while after it's introduction- so if my high-mileage block does give out, then I will just have to cry into a beer and then go find a low-mileage m44 block from a junkyard, because it is my choice to look at it less as an engine failure and more as an opportunity to upgrade ;)

as I've made changes to the car's setup since getting home I have thought quite a bit about how to make sure the turbo setup has the quick-spooling behavior of a rally car- so I am not planning on a light flywheel, but I am considering using a water-air IC rather than the front-mount I already have. if I were to keep the car naturally-aspirated, then reground cams, an aluminum flywheel, and an e36 tranny with a 1:1 5th would be a no-brainer because the ITBs certainly do shift the fat part of the power curve up the rpm range, much the same way hotter cams would.

anyway, yeah, stay tuned. I can't promise progress will happen quickly because I am back to being a college student again, but it will happen.

sorry to have gotten your hopes up- the ITBs aren't going anywhere, they're just getting forcefed at some point in the future ;)

did a little more work on this thing over the past couple weeks. since i last posted here:

- alpha-N unit turned out to be bad, went back to afm :(
- pulled the convertible trunk anvil and put in thicker rear spring pads to eliminate rubbing
- installed volvo 960/e36 aux fan in front of radiator and eliminated clutch fan
- swapped out 4.10 clutch diff for a 4.10 torsen
- restyled front valance and reiger lip

pics:

more details on e30t/r3v if you're curious, or just ask. :)

at&t won't let me upgrade to an iphone 3GS until later in the month, and i haven't decided whether or not to go for it yet (if i do, that's $200 i can't spend on the car). if i do, you'll have video. :)

i can tell you that with the alpha-N unit and a markD chip, the breathing up top was fantastic. wound out to 7000 like it was going to win a prize for it.

my a-N turned out to be faulty (didn't affect open-loop, but daily drivability was awful), and so i had to go back to AFM and after that the power curve fell off a little after 6000... the weight reduction and deleting the fan made up for it, but i still can't help but think how it'd be with some better EMS.

so yeah, if you're going to do the dbilas setup, at the very least get their alpha-N so you can delete the AFM. i would honestly recommend megasquirt, though.
