So you actually run water from the garden hose through the engine?

Dave, can you elaborate on the garden hose method?

I found that the rear right wheel has a lug nut missing, and under closer inspection, it was snapped off in there, Theres a piece still there. Shops wont even look at it, dont want to touch that kind of job.
drilling out and rethreading is the only way?
Has this happened to anyone on here?

Engine + Driveline / Quick BMW antifreeze/coolant question

BMW coolant is not pre-mixed, you need to supply water, distilled is prefered. But the m42 has a low capacity. You just need one gallon on each.

Excellent, just what i wanted to know. Thank you.

Engine + Driveline / Quick BMW antifreeze/coolant question

The engine driven fan seems to work well. It spins well, it's not missing blades or broken. Not sure how to tell a poorly working one.
I'll check the aux fan tomorrow.

That screw is in my shopping cart.

anything else i should look for?

The radiator doesnt appear to be cracked anywhere. Actually doesn't look original, doesnt look like a 22 year old radiator. Nothing is leaking. The hoses seems fine.

Engine + Driveline / Quick BMW antifreeze/coolant question
« on: April 10, 2012, 06:59:15 PM »
My newly bought 318i showed me today that when idling, it will make the temperature rise untill i freak out near red and turn the car off, or turn off to an open road and drive untill it moves back to normal operating temp.
After some searching it seems like a poorly bled cooling system.

Either way, i've been planning to work on the cooling system anyway. I'm buying new water pump, thermostat, belts, and some BMW coolant from Pelican Parts.

it says our cars need a 50/50 mix. Now, my question, is the BMW antifreeze already premixed? So i just need to get 2 1-gallon jugs of this stuff and fill it up? OR is it pure antifreeze and i need to get some distilled water and make a half-n-half solution?

Also, how hard is it to Do this? I never messed with the cooling system of a car.

Good to know, thank you. But that seems a bit expensive, to be honest, for what it is. Resonators go for much less, and in all honesty that thing looks like a little stubby muffler, maybe a 12 inch or around there?

I was afraid of this, but in the back of my mind knew this would need to happen all along.
I just bought the car, and the PO installed a short throw with a new selector rod. I don't know what brand the short throw is, i looked up top and beneath the car but didn't see any markings to signify the manufacturer. The selector rod looks really good, i dare say might be a UUC. The PO said he didn't install a lot of the bushings/fittings/etc, and left them all in a plastic bag for me 0_o.

Hey, can you tell me about the Ford 02 Sensor that you mention in your signature?

once my shoulder heals (Just had shoulder surgery), i'm gonna get my friend to come by and help me do the job. I figure I might as well order a guibo and do that too. I remember taking one off my other friends 318is, but that was years upon years ago. For now, im just gathering info so when i get in there it'll be a bang up job.

Thanks all!

Has anyone done this without taking off the driveshaft? there's barely any clearance, but i really dont want to undo the guibo and get into all of that stuff.

also, is the muffler you got offset on one side? or offset both ends. Which is better for our cars?

that does sound pretty cool. But does seem a bit loud. I usually wouldnt care, but personally I need to stay as incognito as possible.
And yes i too am in need of a new muffler. i was thinking of doing cat and resonator as well, or at least resonator and muffler, keeping the cat stock.

Hey guys, I have a question about building new exhausts.
I looked at parts online and all resonators are basically long tubes. But the stock ones on the 318's are like little short mufflers, right?

So when I go and buy parts to build my exhaust, how do I figure out the resonator purchase? Do i count is as a piece of piping instead?

How-To's / DIY M20 flywheel conversion
« on: April 04, 2012, 01:16:54 PM »
So i've been reading up on flywheels for our cars and would love to get a lighter one. A direct fit solution seems to be only from JB @ turner motorsport for ~$630. These are the most expensive of all other E30 lightened flywheels. Even more so than E30 m3's.

Ive been reading through some M20 conversions, and this seems like a viable solution. However, i dont see many people posting their end costs for the entire job, in parts, or whatever.

So, how much cheaper is the M20 swap compared to a direct fit job? If significant then for me its worth it. If only slightly then why bother?
