WTB/WTT / Looking for differential
« on: March 29, 2016, 08:56:33 PM »
Been looking for a differential for a parked 318i in Alaska, currently visiting Florida(Melbourne area), shipping is always to problem so I'm posting in case any Floridians are parting out a 318, or have diff lying around they would part with.

Are you selling the differential?  If so what does it have?

I'm long since back in Alaska, but still interested if you are willing to ship.  Not independently wealthy, so cost dependent of course. :)

WTB/WTT / Looking for differential
« on: July 21, 2015, 08:39:26 AM »
Visiting family in Toledo Ohio, looking for a differential for a '91 318i.  My car in Alaska has been sitting for years because I haven't been able to source a differential.  Not picky at all, just looking for any small case diff that I can crate and ship up home.

WTB/WTT / WTB:Northern Ohio area E30 Diff
« on: December 23, 2013, 10:13:42 AM »
I'm visiting Ohio from Alaska, I've been looking for a diff for my 91 318i for quite some time, not many of these cars in AK and freight for a diff is steep.  Anyone in the Northern Ohio area looking to part with a small case diff?  I'm not in a position to be picky, but the current unit is a 4.1 LSD.  At this point I just need a diff that I can either install or rebuild that isn't too expensive to buy, since I'll have to freight it to AK.

General Topics / Parts Compatibility 85 & 91
« on: August 27, 2013, 09:38:27 PM »
I have an opportunity to pick up an 85 318i for a few hundred bucks for parts.  I'm in dire need of a differential, and I'm in Alaska where there don't seem to be too many 91 318i diffs floating around and shipping/freight is steep.  So my question is weather there are going to be many compatible parts from the 85 318i?  It has the m10 motor, so I know there won't be anything much there.  I'm thinking of things like fuel pump/interior parts/heater&ac parts.  The diff on the 85 is an unknown, so I'm trying to decide if other compatible parts will make the purchase less risky(in terms of value)

Anyone have any input?  Thanks!

WTB/WTT / WTB Diff for 91 318i

Looking to buy a working diff for my 318i.  It's a daily driver, don't need anything crazy, just something that doesn't howl.

Interior / Interior color for floor mats
« on: September 07, 2009, 06:11:26 PM »
Unfortunately the RealOEM parts listed don't show any actual color, so I have no idea which is correct.  It narrows it down to seven colors, but half of them seem like they could work(black, anthracite, silver, indigo).  I was trying to find a definitive answer as to what the stock color was.

Electrical / Power Antenna Belt replacement
« on: September 06, 2009, 11:06:33 PM »
It has to be a relay, since the stereo is basically applying voltage to send the antenna up, then removing voltage to cause it to come back down.  If yours only spins one direction, might be a bad relay.  Mine went both ways even when it was stuck.  It would try and send it up, get to a sticking point and stop, then do the same on the way back down.

Any info that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Electrical / Frozen
« on: September 06, 2009, 02:23:48 PM »
When I bought my 318 the antenna was frozen as well, it seems like they don't do too well if they don't get used.  I was able to get it fully functional with some WD40 and a lot of patience.  If I remember correctly, I did actually use some extremely fine sandpaper(600+ grit, might have been 800 grit) to polish up the chrome on the antenna mast.  This last issue, I was thinking I Might try a "Magic Eraser."  I use them to polish the chrome on some stuff in my kitchen when it needs it, it works quite well.

Electrical / Power Antenna Belt replacement
« on: September 05, 2009, 04:17:44 PM »
My power antenna failed this summer.  After taking it apart, I found it was simply a broken belt, which I thought should be an easy fix.  Unfortunately, I had a hell of a time finding the belt, so I thought I would post a source.  The belt on my '91 318i is a 2.03mm (MXL) pitch, 60 tooth, 6mm wide belt.  I found a supplier online who has a decent online store and will sell you a single belt for about $3.50 + shipping.  I'm in Alaska, so shipping was more than the cost of the belt, but still much cheaper than replacing the whole thing(and a lot less wasteful).  They have various other options for materials and tensioning material, I went with a Urethane belt with kevlar tensioning (A 6B16M060060).

Electrical / Remote Start
« on: November 20, 2008, 02:55:46 AM »
Just wanted to get opinions on remote start brands.  I'm hearing DEI, any specific considerations for a manual 91 318i?  Did any manual 318's have a neutral position sensor, and has anyone ever remote started their car with it in gear?

General Topics / Will a dry windshield fry a wiper motor?
« on: February 20, 2008, 02:07:52 AM »
Regarding my 91 318i:

I replaced my wiper motor about 3 months ago.  It had fried itself, getting hot enough to melt the plastic shield that goes over it.  IIRC, I had left the car to warm up(I'm in AK) and when I returned I smelled the smell of plastic cooking and the wipers didn't work.

So I replaced the motor, all seemed well, then tonight I stopped to do some work, left the car idling under the car port, and when I came out after about 10 minutes the motor was smoking, and again no wipers.

Can this happen just due to friction from a dry, but warm windshield?  Are these motors prone to self destruction?

I do NOT look forward to doing that replacement again.
