Exterior / Fresh E30, what colour to repaint?
« on: December 12, 2010, 05:28:12 PM »
Dark blues are always my favorite on E30s. If you're going for a red then consider Mugello or Henna. The orangey reds always look great on E30s.

Awesome color. Looking very good and yes, go lower. Those Slipstreams? The gold/green actually looks good. Any other plans?

No interior shots as of yet.  The driver's seat is a mess, foam is good but the covering is shredded in a few spots. Passenger seat is mint.  Rear seat top and bottom both have aftermarket slip covers on them because the actual covering is missing.  The headliner is gone, bare roof and OE Cardboard stuff up there.  I'm in the process of making a new shift boot, and ebrake boot. I'd love to wrap my A and B-Pillar moldings and re-upholster the inserts of the door panels but I think that the doors are going to be a bitch! Just bought a parcel shelf (car didnt have one before) and premium speakers.

I'm hoping to re-do the seats in black microsuede from Kevin at CreativeOptions and get a headliner from him too.. i could personally care less if my sunroof worked although i do have a complete sunroof module in my garage ready to replace the current broken one.

I'm chipping away one bit at a time but I'm having a blast. I don't know what I want to do for wheels though.  At first I wanted black and red XXR 513s, but now I'm leaning toward gold BBS w/ a polished lip or one of my favorite rims of all time Ronal R10 Turbos..  what do you think for wheels?

Ah, nice. The recovering ought to be fantastic. I'll probably be redoing my headliner in some kind of cloth. Mine is very clean, but I don't particularly like the vinyl. I think either wheel would look fantastic. I'm holding out for some RSs unless I find something else for the right price. If you like the R10 Turbos (which are fantastic, BTW) you might like some Compomotives. JackBenny over on R3V has a pair on his 318is and they look great.

Hope he doesn't mind me using his pic! He's got one of the best build threads I've read. Def check it out.

Car looks fantastic!

So glad you ditched the lights it came with. I think some frenched or smoked Hellas will look fantastic on it. I'd also get some euro grills and do some all-red tails, but you're on the right track.

Any interior shots?

Very nice.
Is it Alpinwhite 1 or 2?

Thanks!

As YetiX said, it's Alpine II.

Awesome looking car, I know a guy selling borbet type H wheels 15x7 for 300 with tires. You should look into those. They would look stunning on the car.

I'm set on RSs or something of the like. Gotta have lip and be a weave of some kind for now! It's just always been my favorite style on the E30.

i hate you, that's what mine should be... (it's an alpine white under the green lol)

Hahaha, thanks.

Looks very clean... how many miles?

Welcome!

Thanks! 123k right now but it doesn't show it except for the suspension. That's why I'm addressing that first!

Thanks for the comments everybody! Lots of great info/people on this site. Glad to have found it!

Morning, guys!

Just picked up my first E30, a 318is, a few months ago! It needs a good bit of work, but overall I'm very happy. Can't wait to get everything taken care of and enjoy having this on the road. Here's some pics from the previous owner, I'll get some of my own when I get a chance!

Plans so far:
-Billy Sports and H&R Race springs
-New bushings and RSMs
-New headunit/speakers
-All red tails
-Euro filler plate
-Wheels eventually (not sure what I'll do)

Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / Car won't idle - dies immediately

Mine did the same thing when i replaced the mess under the intake turned out was lose vac line to the icv

Yeah, my cooling/vac system is stock, so everything is still rather inaccessible at this point. I never got below the lower intake manifold as it never seemed like I needed to (fuel hose is accessible with only upper mani off, and coolant leak seemed to be coming from the line that goes from the small heater plate beneath the TB to the actual heater plate after the TB) but it's possible that I loosened something pulling the ICV and other things out of the way.

Yeah, that's what I meant.  The fuel supply line to the rail and the fuel return line from the FPR.  Sounded like the car wouldn't start right after the fuel line fix.

If I had to guess, I'd say to check the throttle position sensor, vac lines & idle control valve.  A bad TPS could be signalling that the engine isn't idling when the throttle closes, so it goes too rich & cuts out only at idle.  Vac leaks always cause idle problems, and a stuck ICV would do that too.

Would a simple disassembly and reassembly cause any of that though? The car ran fine before and ran fine once after I replaced the lines. I'll check those things but I'm leaning more towards something I did wrong and less towards a part failing. I could be very wrong though. Thanks for all the help/suggestions!

Make sure you didn't cross the lines.  If you have the feed & return lines mixed up it'll do just what your car is doing. Check that first before you mess with the cable.

Puff of blackish smoke?  Vac leak?  If you're car backfired maybe it blew out a hose?  Fuel shouldn't be anywhere but in the rail.

Cross which lines exactly? The fuel lines? It ran fine the first time I started it after I fixed the leaky fuel lines. I only took things back apart because I noticed a small coolant leak that I hadn't noticed while the fuel leak was going on. Put everything back together after getting that hose fixed and now I have the issues. I'm 95% sure everything is back together in the right places, but a connection may be bad or loose.

Sorry the OP didn't have that info.

Thanks!

Hey guys!

Just replaced the two fuel lines that are prone to leaking as I've had some problems with them. Fixed my fuel leak, but now the car won't idle! Put everything back together and while the car starts up just fine, it won't hold an idle and immediately dies once the revs drop. If I give it gas, it runs fine. Occasionally, it will idle for a bit but it's very rough. Went back through and checked all my vacuum lines, and I think I've gotten everything. This leads me to believe it's an issue w/ the throttle. How likely is it that the adjustment of the cable was messed up, causing the throttle to close completely when I release the throttle? If this is the case, how should I go about adjusting it? What did I do wrong?

Also, my friend who was standing by the engine bay when I started it back up noted that a small puff of black-ish smoke came from the area that the hoses are located when I started the car. I checked, and the area smelled like burnt rubber. Was this just old fuel on those lines burning off and singing the hoses a bit? What else could this have been? I feel like I've finally got this engine almost buttoned up and running right. There are just a few small little things that keep bugging me so I figured I'd ask some people who have likely seen this before! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Thanks so much for clearing that up, everybody. Nice post, Gooch. Helps a lot.

I'll be heading to check out the car tonight and getting an idea of what parts I need and want to replace while I'm in there. Already replaced the fuel lines a while back, as mine had begun to leak. I'll recommend that anybody replace those while they're in there as it's only a few bucks, takes only a couple minutes, and even though mine looked fine and didn't leak one day, they sprung a leak out of nowhere the next.

Awesome work!

Your car is a lot like mine (except I have black interior). You're also doing a lot of what I plan to do, just in a much smaller time frame, lol. Very motivating thread. Keep us posted! Car is looking great!

You are correct. The valve cover connects to the intake elbow. You don't want to put your valve cover under vacuum from the TB. I will correct it.

OK, thanks!

That upper connector on my intake elbow (the one closest to the TB) has never had anything hooked up to it in my car. It might be sealed off. We'll see

EDIT: Last question: So what's going to be connected to the medium sized connector on the middle of the side of the throttle body (one w/ numbers printed on it in post 246). I have that throttle body, as does the car in the e30owners writeup. He connected the downward-pointing angled one to the valve cover, and the ICV to the intake elbow, but I can't figure out exactly where that middle one goes.

I'm sure it would make more sense if I had the car with me, but it's a ways away and I need to get all the info I can before I get back to it to tackle all this.

Okay, sorry if this has been covered, but I see some confusing info. In the OP, the second picture says "One vacuum hose from the valve cover to the throttle body". However, the picture has red circles at the valve cover and the intake elbow. What's right?

I also have the later throttle body (First pic in post #246). It has (from what I can tell) 3 vacuum lines going to it. One large, downward-pointing angled connector, a tiny connector (apparently for crank case ventilation) and the medium sized connector. What ends up connected to these and where from?

I'm still reading through threads on this, but I'm a bit confused at this point.
