Engine + Driveline / gearbox troubles
« on: July 19, 2009, 11:54:24 AM »
The input shaft tip of the early 1990 made gearbox was smaller than the late year shaft. It was a mid-year change. You can use either one, you just have to use the correct sized pilot bearing. RealOem will have the info. If you enter different mfg dates you can find when it changes.

Did you bleed it with the heat on?
Did you check the fan clutch?

Engine + Driveline / M40 clutch info needed.

The clutch used is the same one as a 1991 318is NON-AC clutch. You should be able to find a listing for it. I have the same set-up. You should have the flywheel lightened and balanced while it's out. Mine is down to 17 lbs. I believe the stock unit weighs 22.5 lbs.

Here's a good thread from the Schuman forum.

You can google it and find plenty of info.
I used Shout Gel for a degreaser.
e-bay might be your best source for the acid.

Engine + Driveline / No Heat?
« on: October 18, 2008, 09:16:43 AM »
It sounds like everything is working except that it is not flowing hot water through the heater core as it should. 3 causes for this:
Air bubble in the system preventing full flow.
Improperly functioning heater valve.
Clogged heater core.

Mercedes recommends a citric acid flush for their cooling systems. I just finished doing this on mine, and if there's  crud in the core the flush procedure should clear it. It is pretty involved, and will kill an afternoon doing it, but it is effective. Info is on the MB mechanic board.

I tried the LED's in my dome lights. Not enough light output for me, too dim. Went back to incandescent.

Engine + Driveline / QUICK QUESTION: Differential Fluid Amount

No way you could put that much in the stock diff. That 1.32  qt sounds about right. I always have at least a half bottle left over.Maybe the PO put a medium case diff in.

I have never seen glass replacements. But there is a vendor on e-bay that sells the plastic replacements. They go for about $50 for a pair. A good condition used light would be a better way to go.

Nice cars. I see we have similar tastes in cars. I have a white 318is, and a white 87 W124 300d. I have the AMG aero 2 wheels like yours in the chrome version. That MB rules up on the highway. The BMW rules on the twisties.

Engine + Driveline / Clutch replacement

The JB flywheel should fit. It is the same size as OEM. It would be perfect for a stock or close to stock M42. A modified engine pushing more HP should have a 228mm flywheel and PP to give it more clamping power. That's why people like the M20 mod. Take a look at the Metric Mechanic flywheel package also. It's the m20 mod already to go. No starter issues. About $700 complete.

The fidanza WILL NOT fit an e30 tranny. It is a 240mm flywheel. It fits a e36 because of the different tranny. Save yourself some money and do the m20 flywheel mod. Lots of info on here about it. Do a search.

General Topics / Where to purchase original style fuses/relays?
« on: September 17, 2008, 04:14:49 PM »
The stealer may be the only place for OEM fuses. I've never bought any, I just grab them at the junkyard. An old fuse works as well as a new fuse if the contacts aren't dicked up. The relays look like standard Bosch relays sold today at most auto parts stores. The color may not be the same, but you could transfer the cover from the old relay.

Interior / Odometer gear repair - need more info & link
« on: September 17, 2008, 04:08:23 PM »
I don't know of any tech thread, but I can tell you from experience that you don't need it. The hardest part of the job is removing the cluster from the dash. There are about a dozen screws on the back of the cluster. Remove them all. The speedo comes right out. The gears are in a clear plastic case around the speedo assembly. There are a couple of small screws that hold the case cover on. Remove these. The gears are now accessible to replace. They slide on easily. Put some lightweight grease on the gears.  I'm sure once you get in there you will want to clean the dust out of the cluster. Put er back together and you're done.

Engine + Driveline / m42 tools needed

What's a chain tensioner tool?

It looks like a piece of threaded rod with a threaded sleeve on it. You screw the sleeve into the hole where the tensioner goes, and then screw the rod into the hole to apply pressure to the chain.
The spring loaded tensioner in the engine does not apply enough pressure to the chain to allow for a correct adjustment.
It basically "loads" the chain to simulate the tension on the chain while the engine is running. If this tool is not used, the timing will be off a little when the engine is running.
