Crappy paint. very little rust around sunroof.  Sun roasted dash pad, decent interior.
Runs well ,timing set /head/ etc done around 60K ago. Always synthetic oil.
300K or more , nice quiet drive train,   Weak AC but works,
 Drives nice .
Trade for Miata with hardtop or 3500$.
 Thanks, MM

M42 Reference / Engine failure / timing chain slipped
« on: February 22, 2013, 08:42:16 PM »
If you bent the valves the lifters wil be loose as the valves dont come allof the way up. Either way you will need to pull the head.
The rings and bottom end  last a long time( 500k)  with synthetic oil. Not so much with crap oil.

Engine + Driveline / Cam swap - Intake cam on exhaust side
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:04:51 PM »
I found them to be the same specs.  I dont have any  later cams . But the 91 cams are the same to each other.  The VW 16 cams are not the same.

« on: July 16, 2010, 08:23:05 AM »
Eibach usually dont list the rates. I never buy them because of that.
H&r for street stuff , hyperco or Suspension springs for race cars. Cut the stock front  ones for the German cars. MM

General Topics / how many would go to FSP scca
« on: June 26, 2010, 10:52:23 AM »
I have a  FSP, 16V Jetta , a FSP/ITB Golf and the M42/30. The  16V Jetta kicks all the ass, esp with my dynamic rear steer system. I cant see the E30/M42 getting any where close to the VW.  The weight is about 200# more.
The M42 would need a full locker diff,  No AC, big throttle body, a second gear that runs 70mph, etc.  Also 13 in  wheel/tires dont fit over the brakes.
The  E 30 is such a nice street car, while the VWs make better race cars and less nice street cars. The VWs are of very low value dollar , while the stock, E30 has some $ value.
I would feel bad compromising the M42/E30 for the auto cross stuff.
If you are running in Fl. E mail me and we'll show up with one of the cars. MM

Engine + Driveline / WHat's this sound?
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:01:25 AM »
Sitting under a car cover promotes all kind of rusting parts, like the clutch plate sticking  to the flywheel, rusty brakes that wont move, etc. Sticking valves, belts stuck to the crank etc.  The car needs to breath.

They are a small difference. Try the small adjustments offered above first. There should be enough to get back the range that you need. IMHO.

Try changing the air door position.  Add about 3-5 clicks of tension to the coil spring.
Maybe you could lean it  with the airtemp sensor or HOH temp sensor. It would need to read about 20% hotter than real.
I would do the air meter thing first, followed by the  air temp sender( In the AF meter), than the water temp sender,as it is under the intake.   Look in t he book to see how much resistance value to change .
Ps I foregot, there is a air bypass screw under the plug on the AF meter. Maybe you can get some leaner by opening that up. You have to pull out the plug, ( soft lead). back out the allen screw. This only affects the very low end of rpm. MM

You would stand a good chance of scratching the valve sealing face. Leave it alone.
Run some Techron thru it. Maybe carb cleaner siting  in the holes, blow it out the next day.  I would avoid the heat thing..
VW had a recall that used  walnut shells blasted into the back of the open valves. Vacuum out of the plug hole, blow it out , etc.  Worked.
