Engine + Driveline / Death of an M42, last night

While I have no videos to prove it, I have had better days. After a full top end rebuild my engine let go last night. Heading down the freeway everything was kosher. It began to lose power and I tried to pull it over (in traffic). Luckily there was an offramp right in front of me. I barely got off the freeway and POOF. Engine died and copious amounts of dark black smoke bellowed out. I pushed it to the side of the street and popped the hood. Well, no leaks at all, but no coolant either. Overheated, hardcore. To give you an idea of how hot it was, I spit on the valve cover and it boiled. No lights came on, the temp gauge was perfect, no steam, WTF???

Well I guess those aspirations of an M30 Swap are going to come faster than I thought.... Well assuming I can find a bag of money sometime soon.

Engine + Driveline / HOLY SHITE, A Lot of water in my throttle body
« on: February 25, 2010, 08:50:26 PM »
Word! I am running fossil oil in it right now, since I planned on changing it after a hundred miles or so to flush out anything.

I'll run it for a bit and sitch to Synthetic 5-40 or so

General Topics / The mess under the intake

OK, Quick question... Hoping for a clear answer.

Where does the nipple on the bottom of the throttle body connect to? Is it capped or brought in to the Intake Hose?

Thanks
Sal

Well that's reassuring.

It looks like the level is down just a bit, but it looks more like remnants of water, not full on milk.

Do you think I'll need to replace the oil right away, or just monitor it. I dont want that milk crap getting the rod bearings hot.

WTF???

Just rebuilt the top end including a head gasket. Deleted the mess under the intake. Yesterday I was driving and the intake boot (in between the Maf and the throttle body) cracked big time. Barely made it home with a lot of dying along the way.

So today I drive to the stealer to get another boot and when I go to replace it, I find a TON of water (clear water) pooled in my throttle body. The valve cover breather that connects to the boot showed signs of milky oil. So I took off the oil filler cap (traces of white milk), then pulled the dipstick (again faint traced of milk).

Please help!!!

Engine + Driveline / Idle issue after top end rebuild
« on: February 23, 2010, 08:07:48 PM »
Hey guys,

So I recently rebuilt the top end on my 91 318is. New head gasket, all intake and exhaust gaskets, water pump, timing chain, m44 timing tensioner, timing chain guides, valve cover gaskets, all front timing cover gaskets,  thermostat, throttle body heater plate delete and all new vacuum hoses. I still have a weird idle issue.

So from stone cold, I start the car and give a little throttle. If I let off of the accelerator, it will bog and die.

So,

I give here a little more throttle to keep it alive. And it does unless I let off the throttle.

So,

I drive the car and if I come to a stop and let off the throttle it dies again.

So,

It warms up a bit and the bog seems to become more stable. It won't die at all. Its strong as nails.

Where should I start?

Who feels like an idiot! I do. How about a block drain plug that I forgot to install. Good thing I didnt get very far to warp the head. Whewww

The head is already back on the running car. It looks like a plug (bolt type).

Today was the first time I started my 91 318is after rebuilding the entire top end. It started up and ran a little up and down. Took a while for it to settle down and not die at idle. It's a little ticky, but that could be due to an oil selection problem (10w-30). What stumped the hell out of my is that there is massive coolant leak at the back of the engine above the headers. It looks like a block or head plug. The crazy thing is I never remember taking it out, and it's not in my left over bolts box (not because i lost them but because I deleted things). Any ideas on a pn? I wish I could see the diagram of the back of this picture attached. Anyone have photos of their head?

Thanks
Sal
