Death of an M42, last night
« on: February 27, 2010, 11:31:21 AM »
While I have no videos to prove it, I have had better days. After a full top end rebuild my engine let go last night. Heading down the freeway everything was kosher. It began to lose power and I tried to pull it over (in traffic). Luckily there was an offramp right in front of me. I barely got off the freeway and POOF. Engine died and copious amounts of dark black smoke bellowed out. I pushed it to the side of the street and popped the hood. Well, no leaks at all, but no coolant either. Overheated, hardcore. To give you an idea of how hot it was, I spit on the valve cover and it boiled. No lights came on, the temp gauge was perfect, no steam, WTF???

Well I guess those aspirations of an M30 Swap are going to come faster than I thought.... Well assuming I can find a bag of money sometime soon.

Sorry to hear that, the engine can't overheat and not show it on the gauge. Unless your temperature sensor was not working right. You have two on the engine, one sends the info to the ECU and one sends the info to the gauge.. was it indicating correctly before the unhappy event?

I had the same issue some years ago. I believe my oil saved my engine. I use Castrol 20W50 High Mileage. I was doing 95 down I-95 heading home and notices the temp guage pegged pass the red. I shut her off and coasted to the next exit. I was able to coast her to the gas station right off the exit. After I replaced the radiator and hoses, I did a compression test and all cylinders were above 200psi.

I hate to hear that, because I like driving my 318i better than my 330i.  I would definitely feel your pain if I blew that engine.
