Engine + Driveline / Re: which oil you would recommend?

I live in Mesa, Arizona.  It hardly freezes here....

I think 15W is not a good idea because it is too thick when cold causing more wear during cold startup. try using a 0W.

I think it depends on how and when you run your car. I personally I don't DD my E30, I only really drive it during the summer months. So 15w-40 oil works for me. At 15 degree Celsius the Kinematic viscosity of 15w-40 is 459.60 mm˛/s, at 0-1 degree Celsius 5w-30 & 0w-30 are around the same viscosity. Now If I were to run my car during the winter months, I'd definitely switch to a 0w or 5w.

Here are some charts and graphs I made a couple years ago relating to oil viscosity. Not the greatest charts around but they do the trick. If anyone's interested I can send you the excel file.

Engine + Driveline / Re: E30 M42 Engine Cooling.
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:31:47 PM »
Around March 11, 2014 my car had a water pump failure.  I posted pics, and a write up on my Member Profiles thread.  I ordered new water pump, and thermostat.  Could be a faulty thermostat, or the radiator no fully functional anymore.  I know my father used 50/50 mix of distilled water, and Zerex, but maybe the previous owners used Arizona tap water which could be very bad.  Arizona water in the Phoenix Metro Area is know for having high alkaline content which is bad for cars with aluminum parts.  So at this point if I have to order a new radiator I could just order a M20 radiator, over flow tank, and all the hoses.  See if I can find a fan shroud like in the pics I have uploaded.  It's a RHD M40 Powered E30 that is for sale in Thailand, or rig up something.

Engine + Driveline / E30 M42 Engine Cooling.

Being I live in the great State of Arizona.  I have noticed my engine temperature moves around a lot lately. Above 65 MPH, or go up hill the engine gets temperature goes up.  I was wondering if it's possible to use a M20/M50/M52/M54/S50/S52 radiator on a M42 powered E30?   I think I can, but I'm just checking here to see what are your thoughts.

I use Shell Rotella T Triple 15w40.  It's made for over the road diesel tractor trailer trucks.  I use my E30 318i for work. I drive at least 100+ miles a day in stop and go traffic in Arizona.  I change my oil every 3 months because my odometer doesn't work at the moment.  I can find the oil at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, and pretty much every auto parts store here.  I can find it for about little under 14.00 USD per U.S. Gallon.

I want to find a rear spoiler like the one that is on my E28 US Spec 535is, and late model E30 front "IS" lip.

M42 Buyer's Guide / Re: Buying a 1984 318i

1984 318i 2 door is a great car for a 16 yearold! I have seen M10s lope like a big block V8!  Yeah it had 45 MM side drafts, 300 degree Alpina cam, and wouldn't idle worth a damn, but it had 180 SAE HP in an engine dyno!  M10s are famous for revving until it fails.

If you have kids just get an E28 528e super eta, and swap in a M42 from an e30.  I wonder if anyone has done that?

Off-topic discussion / Re: PelicanParts posted an odd 700

One of my Dad's friends has a 700 it's a nice little car, and I think it worth a pretty penny now.  I would have used a R series flat twin so I could put it back to original, but it could have been a roller, rusted out, or both.  Oh I work on Sundays, and when I was driving to my first call this morning I saw 3 cars on the AZ 101 today.  1 Lamborghini Miura, 1 Ferrari 250 GT vert, and an Alfa out for a Sunday morning drive ... I was a little wowed!

Anything newer than 1995 is a maintenance nightmare!  I had a 1997 528i w/ a manual.  Driveline is great, but everything else just brakes too often.  I sold it to my brother ...  I love my E28, E30, and pre 95 E36.  Rock solid cars.

My Dad recently bought an E53 X5 3.0xi ... a 5%er manual transmission and it's a 2004 ... a six speed!
