Fan turns whenever engine is ON, stops easily with rolled up newspaper, fan clutch seems the likely culprit.

Engine management / Need Help Diagnosing Over-Heating
« on: July 06, 2014, 10:38:27 AM »
1991 318is, 180xxx miles.

It doesn't overheat driving moderately in ~80 Farenheit weather yesterday

It does overheat if idling but not moving - was able to nurse it home by shutting it off at traffic lights, and pulling over to let it cool a couple of times.

Radiiator fan spins turns like nothing is wrong.

Has fluid in plastic "overflow" tank that's on driver's side of radiator, right up to the line that's about 2/3 of the way up.

I'd appreciate suggestions as to what part I might try replacing - need to fix asap, if I can't fix it within a few days, it'll have to go into the shop because I need it for next weekend.

Many, many thanks in advance for advice.

If it's welded to the frame rails, does it provide some additional stability and anti-roll strength, I wonder.

Well, that is possible, actually - the did have to replace a light bulb in there.  I will ask, and thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Your SRS light is flashing because they removed the airbag steering wheel without first disconnecting the battery.  This will ALWAYS cause the SRS light to flash.  You must always disconnect the battery before removing steering wheel.

The shop that did the repair is responsible for resetting the SRS light.
I don't think my steering wheel has been removed.  My seat belt buckle - the red button place that the seat belt attaches to - is sticky, and the service station says that might be the issue.  Every time I press the button to release the seat belt, it stays down and I have to use the buckle in combination with squeezing the outside of the assembly to get the red button to come back up again - and if I don't do that, the seat belt won't latch, so I try to do it as I leave the car so that I can just buckle up and go the next time I get in.

The car is going to the service station on Monday - I'll let them have a look and will report back on what I find out.

I'm pretty sure I have an airbag steering wheel.  I have the 4-spoke design, and I thought the non-airbag was the 3-spoke style.

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that it could be passenger side airbag, but I don't even know if these car has that.

My 1991 318is definitely has electrical issues but it's functioning well enough to drive.  I had no speedo or tach and while the car was at the service station, they found and replaced a couple of fuses and - yeah - I've got speedo/odo and tach working.

But once they fixed that, the SRS light on the display that's between the rear view mirror and the sun roof is now blinking.  I assume this means something with air bags but I have no idea what.  My car also has no glove compartment, no radio, and whatever things, e.g., that displays the time and temperature, that are supposed to be front and center are just dangling in and out of the center of the dash.

I also don't have a electric to the passenger side window switch, and also have this going on at the right front and I'm curious as to what that wire over there might control.   I tracked down the panel and, as soon as it warms up a little, will install it.

Guidance about any/all of these things will be greatly appreciated.

Raceskids - looks exactly like what they sell on bavauto.com - they're less expensive on bavauto if memory serves.

I don't know why, but I think I"m either going to go with Red46, which is less expensive, or the HIKFab one, which seems the most robust.

I appreciate the link - thanks very much.

mabeer, that one looks good - it's currently at the top of my personal list.  That it attaches to the frame just seems better to me.

bmwman91, I've heard it's a pain in the arse which is why I will outsource this one.  I just found a local service station that seems to be experienced in this sort of thing for race/rally purposes.

Frederic318is, no way I'll roll my own on this.  Changing my own window switches is about my speed, but I'd be happy to look at pix of what you did as I'm sure others would be, too.

Anyone know if this forum supports giving notifications by email of updates to threads?  On other forums, I make that my default, but I can't even figure out how to do it on this one thread, let alone for everything.

Thanks, all.

Engine + Driveline / M42/E30 Skid Plate
« on: January 07, 2014, 12:30:42 PM »
Hi.  I've been driving a new-to-me 1991 318is for a few months.  I live near NYC and will drive the car there sometimes, and I worried about trashing my oil pan on some raised manhole cover.

The car is completely stock, a not-even-daily driver (I work from home), and I'm wondering if a skid plate is worth doing - seems to be about $200 for the part (at bavauto.com) and although I do some minor repairs, I'd have my service station do this and I assume it'll be at least that much more in labor.

Worth it or not?  Piece of mind is worth something, don't know if it's worth $500+  Everything I read says it's a must-do if you have lowered suspension but I don't and won't.

Thanks in advance for your replies, and would also appreciate recommendations on a source for the part besides bavauto is there's better to be had.

Thanks again.
