SRS light blinking
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:10:26 PM »
My 1991 318is definitely has electrical issues but it's functioning well enough to drive.  I had no speedo or tach and while the car was at the service station, they found and replaced a couple of fuses and - yeah - I've got speedo/odo and tach working.

But once they fixed that, the SRS light on the display that's between the rear view mirror and the sun roof is now blinking.  I assume this means something with air bags but I have no idea what.  My car also has no glove compartment, no radio, and whatever things, e.g., that displays the time and temperature, that are supposed to be front and center are just dangling in and out of the center of the dash.

I also don't have a electric to the passenger side window switch, and also have this going on at the right front and I'm curious as to what that wire over there might control.   I tracked down the panel and, as soon as it warms up a little, will install it.

Guidance about any/all of these things will be greatly appreciated.

is yours one of the ones that came with an airbag steering wheel?  if you've replaced it with a non, i can see why it'd throw you an error light.  If you don't have airbags and don't intend on getting an airbag wheel, you could always pull that bulb out

I'm pretty sure I have an airbag steering wheel.  I have the 4-spoke design, and I thought the non-airbag was the 3-spoke style.

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that it could be passenger side airbag, but I don't even know if these car has that.

You'd need the SRS light reset. Unfortunately that's a trip to the dealer. Unless you have a GT1 handy.

If you're talking about those twisted pair blue wires, they run the passenger speaker. You're missing that bit, along with the cover panel. That blocky connector dangling down is an aux power plug that mounts into the left side of the glove compartment door. BMW offered a cool little rechargeable flashlight that plugged into it. You're also missing the cover plate for your six-button on-board computer (OBC). I'll snap some pics of what it's all supposed to look like when I get home.

I have many of the parts you need - PM me if you're interested.

AFAIK the E30 was never produced with a passenger airbag.

Your SRS light is flashing because they removed the airbag steering wheel without first disconnecting the battery.  This will ALWAYS cause the SRS light to flash.  You must always disconnect the battery before removing steering wheel.

The shop that did the repair is responsible for resetting the SRS light.

I don't think my steering wheel has been removed.  My seat belt buckle - the red button place that the seat belt attaches to - is sticky, and the service station says that might be the issue.  Every time I press the button to release the seat belt, it stays down and I have to use the buckle in combination with squeezing the outside of the assembly to get the red button to come back up again - and if I don't do that, the seat belt won't latch, so I try to do it as I leave the car so that I can just buckle up and go the next time I get in.

The car is going to the service station on Monday - I'll let them have a look and will report back on what I find out.

Oh, ok.  i was thinking that they removed the steering wheel to gain access to the cluster.

Well, that is possible, actually - the did have to replace a light bulb in there.  I will ask, and thanks for bringing it to my attention.

There was a 4 spoke non airbag, i have a couple of those laying around

I always found the airbags to be ugly

I found this neat reference for all the possible wheels
