General Topics / cooling issues (HELP!!!!)

If all you did was change the thermostat, take it out and see if it still overheats.  If it stops overheating, you know the thermostat is bad.

General Topics / master cylinder replacement

This is pretty easy to change.  An amateur (like me) can do it in 1-2 hours.  Don't forget to bench bleed the master cylinder before you put it on.  If you don't,  you will never get all of the air out of the lines.

Check Rockauto.com.  They have good prices on Master Cylinders.

It's probably not as big of a deal as you are worried about.  The system is relatively simple and only contains a few components: compressor, evaporator, condensor, expansion valve and receiver  dryer.  Put a new receiver dryer, expansion valve and compressor on it.

If it holds a vacuum, you're good to go.

By the way, the compressor on a 1991 318is did not have the same compressor as two other 325 e30's that I have owned.

General Topics / E30 HVAC Blower Motor Installation
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:41:07 AM »
The motor has to be properly "clocked" and installed in the correct orientation or it will not be seated enough for the strap to be connected.  There is a "dent" in the motor that has to line up with the raised bump on the mounting location.  You have to look at it carefully, because its not real obvious.

Engine + Driveline / Is there any way to get a six speed?

Check with Zionsville Autosport.  They might have a conversion that would work for you.

Engine + Driveline / Fuel pumps

Yes.  The later E30's only had one high pressure fuel pump in the tank.

Engine + Driveline / why did my car take a crap?

Disconnect the big wire at the starter and turn the key to start.  If the fuse doesn't pop, you know where to start looking.

Engine + Driveline / Loss of compression in all cylinders?
« on: June 05, 2009, 07:06:23 AM »
My prediction is that the timing has jumped a tooth or two and the valves have contacted the pistons.  All (or most) of the valves are now bent and stuck open.

The fuel pressure should be about 40 psi.  If its within 10 psi of that, you're Ok.  (Or maybe not OK, because the problem is somewhere else.)

Put the Enkei lugs on there only (no wheels/tires) and see if the noise is still there.

This will also let you look at the spinning hub area more closely.

I have found some caliper bleed screw ports to get plugged with crap.  If nothing comes out when you open the screw, stick a pick (or open paperclip ) in there and see if that opens it up.

Interior / Reupholster sport seat?

You can also get individual panels replaced for considerably less.  I had one panel replaced on the back of a vinyl seat for $65.

General Topics / Reserve Fuel Light Mileage
« on: May 05, 2009, 05:53:48 AM »
I put a gallon of gas in the trunk, so that I could see how far mine would go after the light came on.  On the highway (at 65 mph) my car went 41 miles until it was empty, after the light turned on.

YMMV.

Engine + Driveline / lacking power @ higher revs...
« on: April 23, 2009, 06:44:48 AM »
The fuel pump fuse is blowing because the pump is drawing too much current (or the fuse you have is too small in value.).

So either the pump is bad or its full of crap and can't pump.  To confirm this, put a fuel pressure gauge in the engine compartment.  If it won't pump 40 psi with the engine on, you found the problem.
