Help me figure out what this sound is...
« on: April 11, 2009, 07:37:34 PM »
So I decided to swap over my summer rims today in the nice sunny pemberton weather and was faced with a few issues. Currently I am running 14" studded snows and i was looking to put my 17" Enkei's on.

There was no known noises or anything wrong with the drivetrain beforehand, but after swapping on the wheels and going for a test roll I got a clicking noise in the back end consistant with the speed the wheel was rotating.

I jacked up the back end and spun the wheels in 1st gear and the clicking was still there...and no signs of rubbing. I then put the winters back on and spun them with no noise whatsoever. Something with the wheels is not right and i cant figure it out.

I have two videos of said noises. one with the summers on and one with the winters on. watch and you will see what im talkin about. any help would be great thanks!

Man that is really weird. What's the clearance look like between the calipers and the wheels? That's my only guess, though it looks like there is plenty of room. You've got me stumped on this one, if it isn't hitting the calipers then who knows.

did you check if any part of the wheel was making contact with about anything??? any modd done to make them fit? are the summer wheels deeper inside the wheel well that the winter tires? just thinking here...

there is plenty of clearance, i was told my new lugs were too long and messing with the ebrake in the hub.

either that or that i should push the half shafts out towards the wheel by hand and that should cure it...

That is what I was going to say, lug bolts are too long, I've seen it before on an older VW

That's right. I 've seen this problem on VW Golf and studs were too long.

Put the Enkei lugs on there only (no wheels/tires) and see if the noise is still there.

This will also let you look at the spinning hub area more closely.
