Engine + Driveline / Threw a rod on the way home
« on: November 12, 2013, 11:08:28 AM »
On my way home yesterday my engine decided to end itself and throw a rod out the motor in to my motor mount... I had a couple questions regarding the potentiall m44 swap - is there anything other than the motor I would need? There are several junkyards around me (within 20 miles) and I know one has a really pretty m44 and another has several 'ok' looking m42s.... so, is there anything really different between the two I would need outside of pulling just the motor? Or will I need harness, rack, this, that, etc... thanks in advance

I didn't replace the half moon thing - I still have it (maybe)... but it doesn't seem like it affects anything...

Here are the pictures of what I had before your post (changed it all around last night when I got home) - I cleaned out the ICV as best I could and put it all together and there is no noticable difference... it still idles between 1,400-1,600 at a stop and when coming off the highway to a stop (or being in throttle pretty hard) it'll bounce/pulsate from about 1,000-1,600

First is that elbow from the TB port on the intake arm to that metal nipple - this thing was there when I bought the car so don't blame me :)
Second - the T junction I put in (now ICV goes only to intake port by box and VC hose goes to that metal nozzle on the TB)
Third - shows the hoses coming from the T going to the intake elbow and under/around to the VC port
Fourth - is just a step back shot of the routing - red = the T where the VC and ICV hoses connected; yellow = weird recirc elbow thing

But now it's setup how you said (and others have pictured) - ICV goes only to intake elbow, port on intake arm closest to TB is plugged and VC hose goes to little metal nozzle thing... Thanks for that - now I need to solve the idle/pulsating issue... and get new (to me) injectors as these are ridiculously loud

That makes enough sense, lol - I thought the 0280150556 were 4 port/nozzle and that's why it was referenced has an 'upgraded/oe replacement'

So I'll be on the look out at a couple yards for those - thank you very much

Or - if I were to just order a new set - do you have a recommended part number? I see a new one up for xxx 156 xxx

Is there reasoning behind saying to get the skinny ones instead of the ones that match the factory look? Not siding either way, just wondering.

So, as to not bring up a debate, is the general consensus that a good stock replacement for injectors the 0280150556 ? As they have the same fitment and flow? 22 pages of reading this took a bit of time, lol. I want to make sure I'm about to pay for what's needed in my car (1991 318is prod. 9/90)

Also, what/where is a recommended place to purchase as I've seen a few links but they all seem to be broken (except for the ones that end up getting debunked as too much, wrong size, retarded, etc.)

Thank in advance - need to go ahead and get some.

I'll snap a couple pictures when I leave work today so you can see - but what you're saying hopefully will help with that idle... because it's definitely not set up like that... lol

Also, does that half washer looking thing (part 8 that sits between the TB and the intake arm) need to be there? Or is that nothing?

So - questions - I did this about a week ago (before seeing this thread) and have now looked through all 26 pages. My questions are regarding the vacuum, I know that people have run the vacuum slightly different on each car but there is a general agreement on where everything should go. In the pictures below (taken from engine pictures above) I've tried to show a representation of how mine is routed and would like some suggestions on whether it's fine or I should fix it. The car would idle high once warm when I bought it, I have since does both manifold gaskets and this plate delete mod - after doing a (homemade) smoke test to try and find any vacuum leaks - as the car still idles high (between 1,400-1,600 RPMs) once warm.

The first picture shows (in paint  :) ) how I routed my VC hose - I brought it to a 'T' from the ICV to the intake elbow

The second picture circles a port on the TB that there is a hose coming from that is plugged in to the TB side of the intake boot (red angled/'V' in third picture)

I am also missing "8" from the second picture - don't know how necessary that is.

Lastly - I've seen posts that this TB is only on post 10/1991 production cars, but mine is 9/90 (per realoem)

Anyway - I've seen people route the ICV to the elbow of the intake boot and the VC hose to the TB port of the intake boot but what about that 45* port on the TB (circled in pic 2)? I've also seen people route the ICV to the TB side of the boot and the VC hose to that little port that's circled - but then what about the port on the intake elbow?

I know pictures of my car would help but I can't get them until later (at work) - if all of this is fine does anyone have another suggestion on why it might idle to 1,600 when warm? And if a vacuum leak the best way to find a leak somewhere?

Thanks in advance

So something is definitely going on with all of my heating, lol - the other day when leaving work it all worked, the blower speeds, the heat was hot and everything was great. The next day the blower knob didn't work (still haven't gotten around to taking all that off to get to the resistor so the knob is kind of intermittent) and the heat was still hot (getting too much, had to turn it down).

had the temp dial straight up for the last couple days and then last night had to put the heat back on and it still worked great. well, this morning I get out to come to work and low and behold... heat doesn't work unless on recirc.... even when moving and recirc off it's only slightly warm; turn on recirc and it'll get nice and toasty while moving and cool slightly at a stop.

Getting kind of irritating, lol - I haven't had time to do anything with any of it due to family things (halloween, lol) and helping a buddy move so I can't say anything about any of the parts with certainty... but those are the symptoms

Awesome - thanks for the links I'll definitely be taking a look over the next couple days. I did just recently do that throttle body delete which is why several of the hoses were replaced. So that instead of a forest of hoses that look like a redundant mess (especially in GA) there's one hose coming form the head to that coolant/heater tube thing... lol

unfortunately the injectors weren't replaced and are now ticking  :-\  but I'll be taking care of that within the next couple weeks hopefully - pretty proficient at removing all intake parts now - lol; going to start timing myself I think j/k).

In looking for that bypass I can't honestly tell if it's there based on what pictures I've seen, but I think it is... So when I got a few more bucks and a free da I'll be diving in to that for removal.

Thanks again for the help - as it stands the heat works very good with recirc on - and still works well without, just an obvious temp drop at stops - but is almost immediate in return once moving again.

in the e30 I recently purchased there is a factory/OE alpine bmw alarm... yet, there are no remotes for mine either. Is there a way to tell what all the thing is capable of? ie - cutting fuel, keyless entry, etc.

Do they have a tendency to stop working? If not, where can I get a new FOB? lol I would love to utilize factory equipment

thanks again

So I get to my car in the parking garage last night to drive home - and the heat works  :-\

It'll get pretty hot while driving but when sitting at a stop it starts to gradually cool down - unless I have it on recirculation; then it stays hot.... ideas on this?
