Engine + Driveline / M44 Mass air flow meter on M42

you need the Apexi AFC "select"  they are built specifically for german motronic cars.  my friend used one on his 90' 325is turbo.  pretty neat little tool if you cant afford SEM.

hockey pucks are stiff as rocks.  i had to remove the h-puck tranny monts and put back the stock ones to soften the ride a bit.  was unbelievably shakey at 2-3k rpms.  but seems better with softer tanny mounts.  still stiff though.

Engine + Driveline / leaking coolant: front of head/block/timing cover
« on: September 25, 2008, 11:37:06 PM »
its steady enough to piss a litre over like 5-6miles of driving, but then stops around there.

i tought it was that stupid thing(profile gasket).  i changed it and didnt like how it went togehter in there, and spaced-out when i looked at it, not thinking about these re-percusions.  so back into the chain case i go.  ill take them all off and pressurized the coolant plumbing, then check the h-gasket.  hopfully ill get away with some RTV and a prayer(pressure test result dependant).

thank you folks for the help in diagnosis.  ill get this all checked out soon and then get back on track with everything else.

thanks guys,

-justin

Engine + Driveline / leaking coolant: front of head/block/timing cover
« on: September 24, 2008, 10:37:38 PM »
i just  swapped in this m42 into my 84 318.  i changed all the gaskets/seals EXCEPT the headgasket, as well as all timing chain components and such.

fired it up today and let it run, starts dripping coolant out of the front of the head where it meets the block and top of the lower inner chain cover.

I dont know why the car i got the motor from was parked/sold for $450 so i can assume that it might be the head gasket, as i changed all the other gaskets except that.  the coolant system isnt pressurized, and im not burning coolant.

Did i not seal something with RTV that i shouldve?   its not leaking from the front of the chain cover, or aound the t-stat housing or waterpump.
Is it possible its leaking from behind the upper part of the lower chain case where it meets the block?  its not in the oil at all.

i dont wanna rip off the head if its the chain cover, or vise-verse.  anybody else have a leak fromt his spot??

Engine + Driveline / thrust bearing: easiest way to change?
« on: September 22, 2008, 02:50:42 PM »
i know i can get one done cheaper than that.  and i think that the stock replacement bearings are 360, but not 100% sure.

very helpful info.  i was hoping peerless would chime in on this.  but the motors going back into the car tonite.  i need a car, and im picking up an audi 4000quattro in the next few weeks, so ill get the block square away then.

thanks, more input is welcome

Engine + Driveline / torque specs for FW/PP bolts???
« on: September 21, 2008, 06:02:06 PM »
sorry fellas, i need to purchase a manual for this motor.

anybody have the Flywheel and Pressure plate bolt torque specs???

and while im on the topic, what bentley should i buy for the e30 and possibly the e36 M42's???  its going into an 84 318 and i know the e30 bentley doesnt have m42 stuff in it.

thank you

Engine + Driveline / thrust bearing: easiest way to change?
« on: September 21, 2008, 05:58:33 PM »
i just finished putting new sprockets, chain, rails, tensioner, gaskets and all seals in the m42 i just picked up(175k miles).  go to put the flywheel on and hear a "thunk" when i push the FW down.  take off the FW, andgrab the crank pully and push/pull off the timing case and my crank is thrusting in-out a good 1/32" or more.

so, as  need a car to drive ASAP and just got everything done and almost back in the car, im gonna run it gently for a few weeks till i get my other car back in order, with some Lucas oil additive.  then either find a low milage block or try to change the thrust bearing or all the crank bearings.

questions are:

Has anyone changed the thrust bearing without dissasembling the motor?
like leaving the rods bolted on the crank, take off the chain, remove the main caps and drop the whole crank an few inches, pulling the pistons to the bottom of the cyls?  and maybe swapping in a new thrust(360*)bearing?

Or must i take it all apart and rebuild a block while im there??
if so id probly do some Eagle rods and maybe stock pistons w/ a low C/R MLS gasket and ARPs.

Any thoughts or advice????

TIA

i made hockey-puck motor/tranny mounts.  ill get back to you guys how harsh it is in a few days, swaps almost done in the 84'.  i dont think they are bad though, def. softer than the IE t-arm bushes i just got.  so theyre not as harsh as poly, but stiffer than stock by far.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / m42 turbo or m50 turbo
« on: September 18, 2008, 10:25:59 PM »
m42 for sure.  im just a 4cyl guy though.

i can give you a close estimate for the machine/parts cost of an M42 w/ turbo stuff and MSnS if you want, been pricing it out for myself.  i dont have labor costs besides machine work as i do all my own wrenching.  LMK

oh, getting a 6 puck clutch in the mail soon, and a Holset hy-35 this weekend.  plans are for boost in a month or so.  ebay m50 header chopped, audi wastegate, Apexi AFC select w/ 440's and need to find someone to write me a chip for the ignition timing.

blew the HG in my 84 318(m10) and was tired of going slow.
was going to do a turbo m20, but this m42 kinda fell into my lap, and for $350, i had to get it.

so i have collected:

-m42  175k miles
 w/ complete engine harness/ecu
     -240 getrag
     -driveshaft
-87' 325i  3.76 LSD
   +rear s.frame, t-arms w/ disks

-battery cable to trunk from non m10 e30
-plastic bumper swap F+R from the 90' w/ front tin work
-m20 single-mass flywheel

So, ive put on the rear t-arm w/ disks awhile ago.  recently got the motor pulled from my car and the front end swapped.  was waiting on parts which arrived yestr/today.

got all new gaskets, seals, timing chain, sprockets, rails, and tensioner. and IE rear bushings for the sub and t-arms, along with a much needed wheel stud kit :D
total: $1100    (timing chain was why i wanted to go m20. too much $$$) but i kinda like that this motor is a mini m50, ya know??

im building my m42 to turbo soon as well.

i was curious as to what chip you are useing? as primarily ill be using the stock ecu as well.  going to get an Apexi AFC select for the fuel, just need a chip to deal with ignition timing.

this is a most needed modification to the 80's-esque crome that bedazzles our e30's.

looks much better now   but you still gotta paint the lock-rubber in the windshield seal ;)

once i paint my car ill do this as well, but a running motor/car are definitly a priority.

i PM'ed you a couple Q's on the c101 plug, hope you dont mind....
