Suspension / H&R Sport 50404 ordered, 50404.55 in the box?
« on: August 21, 2009, 06:18:20 PM »
Hi all, long time no post...just getting back into the m42 after a long hard slug of study!

i ordered replacement springs, H&R Sport, P/N: 50404...

the dilemma being that as invoiced and reciprocated on the box is the same part number 50404 depicting H&R -1.25" F/R sport springs, for BMW E30 318is with
M42 + M-Tech.

open the box and find 50404.55 printed on the springs?, that P/N cross-referenced as the OE sport springs for E30 325i.

having searched all available resources the general consensus is that the 50404.55 are correct for the 318is M-tech, and sit the car at a nice hight, subtly lower.

any one else come across this issue? is it a problem, and have i got the wrong springs?

cheers

hi,

cheers al for the help and suggestions

thanks firstly for the suggestion of the c3 kit, though on attempting to contact them they don't reply? also given where i live it is not allowed to have adjustable hight suspension or modify suspension in the way that is needed to run this kit.

I'm leaning toward the koni, though need to find reputable dealers preferable in the US given the exchange rate.

strut tops still k-mac or alternatively available in Australia noltec.

i will in given time get some local prices on items needed, i will post the information when obtained.

cheers

Suspension / Struts out?
« on: June 06, 2008, 07:58:03 PM »
Hi.

I would first head on down to a local wheel alignment shop as you will need one given fact that you have fitted alternative wheel/ tyre package; alignment will be out.

As per you suggested problem, suggestions are though will be clarified at point of wheel alignment;

-your car has been involved in a collision at some point

or

-mismatched, incorrectly replaced strut or lower control arm from a differing model

- severely bent strut

take some quality pictures of both sides with the wheels removed, and we'll see if we can help.

cheers

Engine + Driveline / Whine from the rear
« on: April 29, 2008, 12:37:50 AM »
Hi,  a member for some time now and have only posted for help; now time to give back a little.

Having said what has been suggested and having had similar problems.

The remedy was: new non directional tyres.

The reason being as that directional tyres are noisy by nature in general and when tyres succumb to uneven ware such as on a lowered BMW with independent rear end. The tyres were worn to the wear indicators on the inside and on the outside was 3mm away. At approximately 60mph 100kmh the noise (wining / metallic drown) became unbearable.

Thoughts were wheel bearings, drive shafts, diff, centre bearing and or flex joint. Though having had a full vehicle inspection none of the above mentioned was a problem.

The remedies where; rotation of tyres (front to back),. alternatively replace with new non directional quality tyres (Toyo TEO Plus) as tested successfully.

Hope this information may help.

Hi, small request as I don't have photoshop.

I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to photoshop the below rims onto a white BMW e30 318is coupe.

I'm thinking of 17x7 with 225/45 .

Thanks , a.12912

Engine + Driveline / Cooling system; thermostat, pump, fan-clutch
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:10:20 PM »
Cooling system; thermostat, pump, fan-clutch

I had noted on a cold night that the temp on the gage had creped between neutral and hot.
I have had issues where the temp would creep a little past neutral or ½ way and would rescind from that position towards neutral and cold when driven/ revved hard.
I had concerns for a failing thermostat and fan clutch. The fan clutch has much free play and remains free even when hot. I have disassembled the cooling system on my m42. The radiator is as new, coolant is clean thermostat checked in boiling water and don’t do much and appears stuck, water pump broke removing though seemed ok.

I’m replacing the fan and clutch assembly with that of an electric thematic controlled type, 16” 8 curved blades (brand unknown, though will replace the electrical component with a known and trusted brand).

I had pre purchased a thermostat though am untrusting of the unit. I’m planning on replacing with the correct 88 degree or possibly that of the 80 degree 325i model, any suggestions comments?

The water pump looks ok, though is 300 au genuine BMW replacement cost! The pump had not leaked and appears to have been changed 10 years ago, date of manufacture present. Which non BMW brands are well trusted and successfully used? (laso, gaff, geba)

Any comments or suggestions are welcome; I would also like to specifically know where are the preferred places to purchase our components from, service and price.

Thank you all in advanced

Electrical / oil change and service light
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:35:57 PM »
hi

I had gone about reseting my oil change and service lights.

the method that i used was to simply short out service pins 7 and 19 from memory. the method had turned the lights of.

my concern being is that since doing so when switching the car on at second ignition position all green lights come on then off bar the first one (which rarely comes on at all now) with engine running , the odd occasion the fist Green light comes on with the rest of them at second ignition position ?

since covering about 3k , k's no lights have started to stay on at all reminding of a service. ?

when should the lights begin to stay on or have i bugerd something up , say extended the service period?

Electrical / Two speed fan question.
« on: September 25, 2007, 05:28:51 PM »
I'm under the assumption you'r at a similar stage of a same project to my self. the project is removing the engine viscose fan , clutch and replacing it with a draw / pull electric fan. the scenario that I've come up with is what sensor can i borrow a pick up switch (on/of)  from. alternatively I've placed consideration into an electronically controlled hiestes electrical voltage based switch . the switch will utilize the signal from the the temp sensor for the dash gage and be adjusted to turn on /  of were required.

though I'm aware of the temp switch on the side of the radiator  , then why not use it . the switching temp is also of concern, sounds a little to high? is there such a three stage temp switch from a later moder such as e36? the two stages for the air con condenser fan and separate for the radiator electric fan?

which radiator fans / sources and brands are being successfully used ? size?

cheers all

Engine + Driveline / my new ride
« on: August 28, 2007, 06:24:49 AM »
update:

car is now  serviced :)

new , oil , filters, plugs.
oil used penrite sin 5w-60w + slick50 synth with ryco filter
plugs Bosch super four the new ones :)
K&N filter cleaned and recharged.

ignition leads tested and are 100%
air flow meeter and intake tract along with throttle body assembly cleaned using carby/choke cleaner. (oil vapor catch recirculating system to be implemented)

oil and service light reset,(using miscellaneous 1" bit of wire found amungst top desk draw full of other shit!)

BMW runs much much better ,with the only noise that I'm not 100% complacent with being ticking injectors, all that is audible over the hum of the m42 now.

running and mixture issues would be directly related to dirty air flow meeter, throttle assembly and worn plugs.

engine nose, possible poor mixture and running along with incorrect and failing stability of oil chosen.

till i find moor time to tinker

cheers all
