my new ride

Hi all,
May as well introduce my car here.
Owned my 90 IS for 8 months and driven her for about 5 of that (two cars) with 10k added to the clock: D

Looking for knowledge regarding several items that I’m not 100% convinced are ok?

1. a metallic whoosh sound from the back over 60kph (wheel bearings or diff)

2. Oil consumption, oil in breather hoses air ducting throttle body (pcv valve , ? ). Which oil grade is suitable?

3. Ticking / rattling noise. Prominent upper engine though herd at the bottom also (manly when worm) (timing chain? valve gear?)

4. emissions , of late it has been noted rarely or black blue smoke and pulling into the shed it is apparent that it is running out of proper mixture as it smells like my other 60's car ! (O2 sensor or other? cat converter failing?)

5. Cat converter buzzes once very hot and driven hard ?

6. Running temp. Takes about 5 minuets of 60 to 80kph driving to worm up, needle at half way. The needle in normal driving creeps a little passed half way yet lowers just a touch under when driven hard ?

7. Gear shifter feels sloppy and rarely crunches second?

8. Excused goes under or over rear cross member. Mine goes under and also rubs, girr !

2 and 4 are related. Your engine is burning oil. Time for a rebuild. The engine was probably abused at some point in its life with neglected oil changes.
3. need new timing chain tensioner but it wouldn't hurt to take  look at the condition of the chain, gears and rails. Just part of the engine rebuild.
5. You need a new one. All the burnt oil smoke probably killed it. If you replace it without fixing the burning oil problem, the new cat will probably be poisoned in short order just like the old one.
6. Replace the thermostat.
7. Shif link bushings.
8. ????

Best of luck.

1. Can be the ring and pinion gears in the diff, but it isn't really a big problem.
8. do you mean the exhaust? it is supposed to go under the rear brace. the tubes should be slightly flattened. If they aren't it will rub. A big hammer used in moderation will help a lot here ;).

thanks for all the wisdom, kindly appreciated .

regarding an engine rebuild ? maybe not, prior purchasing the 150k old unit it was throughly inspected and tested more than good :)

regarding the oil consumption and smoke, the consumption is limited to 1 liter per 5k. the smoke as mentioned is very rare and as mentioned "Black blue", black smoke means rich and the blue ish smoke to my understanding is also related to over fueling with fuel wetting the catalytic converter.

my concerns thoughts are a failing PCV emissions system or wrong over thin oil grade. I'm told to use mobil 1 but use castrol edge 5 to 30w . the hand book stated 20 to 50w which is a thicker oil.

i still have concerns regarding the o2 censor, feeding wrong readings to the ecu which if so would relate directly to the over fueling and possible temp issues.

thermostat is purchased and to be replaced, dayco brand purchased. which other coolants are used with successes?

Did i mean the exhaust? yes , sorry typo, I'll fix in a similar manner though less brutal. I'll simple remove and pres bend to shape.

cheers all so far for your help.

PS: i  reside in Australia

update:

car is now  serviced :)

new , oil , filters, plugs.
oil used penrite sin 5w-60w + slick50 synth with ryco filter
plugs Bosch super four the new ones :)
K&N filter cleaned and recharged.

ignition leads tested and are 100%
air flow meeter and intake tract along with throttle body assembly cleaned using carby/choke cleaner. (oil vapor catch recirculating system to be implemented)

oil and service light reset,(using miscellaneous 1" bit of wire found amungst top desk draw full of other shit!)

BMW runs much much better ,with the only noise that I'm not 100% complacent with being ticking injectors, all that is audible over the hum of the m42 now.

running and mixture issues would be directly related to dirty air flow meeter, throttle assembly and worn plugs.

engine nose, possible poor mixture and running along with incorrect and failing stability of oil chosen.

till i find moor time to tinker

cheers all
