Never found out what was wrong with the oil. Swapped the engine with a 92 m42 and everything is ok now. No oil consumption and no oil leaks. Thank you all for the help.

Engine + Driveline / 92 m42 swap to 95 E36 318is
« on: March 04, 2014, 05:46:39 AM »
Hello guys. I have a 95 318is m42 with a broken engine and i want to swap the engine (engine block and cylinder head) from a 92 318is. I also want to keep everything from my car like the ecu, valve cover, a/c compressor, ignition coil,  alternator, serpentine belt and tensioners, vibration damper and pulleys. Also the intake manifold and everything that goes with it.

- The 92 m42 doesnt have a/c so belts and tensioners and others are different.

Are all the above swappable or i have to make any modifications or buy some parts?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Checked everything with starting fluid no change to idle.

Vacuum leak causes a lean condition, but your O2 tries to compensate giving you an overall rich condition. Its weird, but thats how it works!

Ok then i will check it out as soon as i can and i will report back.

That would not have anything to do with what you posted though.

Did you have the head pressure checked during the rebuild? In my experience running rich is usually caused by a vacuum leak.

Yes as i was told the head was completely repaired. I think a vacuum leak causes a lean condition but i will check for vacuum leaks very soon.

As long as the restrictor is still in place and not loose, I wouldnt worry about it too much. Its not ideal, but if the rest of the head is in good shape there isn't much point in switching it out.

Yes the rest is in perfect shape allthough the engine is burning oil in some strange way after a rebuild and running rich.

I recently opened the thermostat housing due to replacing timing cover gaskets and i saw that a metal plate on the block which is marked on a photo i found on the internet, is very corroded and the round hole is now double the side and i think the little plate of the thermostat sits there and closes that hole. I dont have any problems with heating not loosing any coolant. Unfortunately i didnt take a photo. Is this a problem??

Exactly as it shows in the image.

Do you still have the numbers, when cylinders were measured? Diameter...

No never saw numbers. The guy from the machine shop came and measured them with his tools and said that the cylinders where within specs and was very sure about that. The rings we used i think were Goetze if anybody knows if those rings are difficult to seat.

I think your problems will be with cylinders, which will be worn or oval, or just not honed. Spark plugs just show that you have the same problem in all cylinders...

If you are right then i have to find an engine but there is no money so....
The thing is that if the car was running rich from before then the rings didnt seated as they should, due to the rich condition and the cylinders are now glazed. Talking about bad luck.

On the photo it looks like youre engine is running a bit to rich.
BUT, the looks also depends on WHEN you did remove the sparks. Did you drive a short distance before removing, or a normal way so that the engine really got on operation temperature.

I didnt know that there was a difference. When i replaced them the car was sitting for many hours.

I found the spark plugs, i thought they were accidentally thrown away. Here is a picture.

I m thinking that maybe the car has bad injectors and running rich. Is this oil consumption possible from fuel dilution???

Tnanks for the posts guys. Yes i am planning to use the rope method and also built a custom tool for compressing if i decide to replace the seals. This morning i told my brother to start the car and no smoke i mean none. I am curious where all that oil goes and i have no leaks. I hope the consumption settles down.
