Engine + Driveline / Mustang Injectors in an M42 engine
« on: May 15, 2012, 04:56:41 AM »
Iīve been running the skinny 700īs for almost a year and a half and except for a stuck injector on #1 cylinder, i havenīt had any problems.

How many people are running these? Any problems? should i be worried?

Engine + Driveline / Reseting the AFM to factory setting

My advice is to find one at a junk yard that doesn't appear to be tampered with, and use that. If you are feeling like spending money, you can get a Python Injection rebuilt one, and send in yours for a core refund. It may run you around $200.

Otherwise, you will need a wide-band O2 sensor and some trial & error to get this one close to its original calibration. Sorry it isn't a cheap, easy answer!

Itīs tough to find these at a JY, as there are very few isīs and what there is has been sitting there under the elements for years.  Letīs see if my first option pans out.

The best way to get it back to stock, would be to run the stock chip, remove stock lambda sensor, and have someone hook up a LM2 or equivalent sensor to measure the exhaust gas. Adjust spring till you see 13.5 AFR, then you can stick your performance chip and injectors in.

All the best!

Right now iīm not running the chip. In order to get it to work properly i need to install an o2 sensor, but i am running the mustang injectors. With out an o2 sensor these were running rich, hence the previous afm adjustment.

I think iīll go back to stock and take youre advice as a first option as it seems the most cost effective route. If this fails then iīll just go with a new or rebuilt afm.

Really? would it be best to just get a new one or have it adjusted to work with the new chip and injectors?

Well gentlemen that is the question. Mine has been tampered with by the previous owner, and then by a less than knowledgable shop after i added some mustang injectors.
I need to get it back to stock so i can get the new chip working properly with the new injectors.

Thanks!

Engine + Driveline / The Little Motor That Won't Stop Breaking [+PICS]
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:40:21 AM »
Glad to see you did this before it turned into something expensive.
Trust me, it happened to me.  It turns out the threaded hole in the head cracked, ripped the bolt from the guide and sent it flying out of the front cover.
It made a hell of a mess on the way out.  The PO decided it was too expensive to fix and just welded the hole in the cover.
Funny thing is i drove it about 50,000 kms this way with no problems. I gave it hell too.
Either itīs a robust motor or i was lucky.

Engine + Driveline / Reviving the e30, issues

Thanks for the links Dave, great write ups.

The car will be going to the shop next week so i can get an experts opinion. In the mean time i took advantage of the fact that itīs a long holiday here and tinkered with the car.

I discovered that the tiny rattle i had is coming from the throttlebody. I mentioned this to my friend only to discover that his does this as well.

As of yet i havenīt taken the DME out or tackled the AFM. I may try during the Xmas holidays. Ideally in order to reset the AFM to factory settings, a picture of an unmolested unit would help. Iīll see if any forum members can help.

I then decided to tackle the rich running cylinder and fouled plug. I removed and cleaned all the plugs and added some dielectric grease. I ran two bottles of gasoline treatment and ran the tank almost dry. I then filled up with 98 octane and added some injector cleaner to the tank.
When i removed the plugs they were all clean, including the one in #1 cylinder. Also, the strong smell of gasoline from the exhaust is now gone.
I also decided to replace the airfilter while i was at it, since i canīt remember the last time this was done.

Yesterday on the drive home i decided to give the car a run up to 6000 rpm and i noticed a large cloud of smoke out of the exhaust. I shifted up and again ran it up to 6000 rpm and again a cloud of smoke.
Naturally i was a bit worried so i pulled over. I couldnīt really find anything wrong visually. The car ran as well as before, so i tried to replicate the events that led up to the smoke. I couldnīt get it to happen again.
Perhaps the high reving may have loosened all the crud in the motor and sent it on itīs way.

Anyway, as i said the car is going to the mechanics sometime this week for a thourough check up.

The low coolant sensor is something that came on the e34. There is a little float screwed to the bottom of the coolant resevoir.

Hello Dave, thanks for the reply!
Currently iīm running Mustang injectors on the car and replaced the wires with new 8.5mm Magnecors. If it is a bad injector then iīm going to need to buy a couple of new injectors as backups.
If itīs a coil then iīll pick up a few of them from the junkyard this week when i go.
When i have a moment iīll take the DME out and take some pictures as i donīt have a clue what to look for. If by any chance it is damaged iīll happily send it to you, if you donīt mind paying the shipping from Spain.

The motor idles a little roughly and sounds rough on start up. As well when i rev the motor i can hear a small rattle from the area of the first cylinder. It doesnīt sound chain related.

Apart from the problems you mentioned, what else would cause a rich situation on a single cylinder?

Here is a picture of the spark plug from cylinder #1. You can make out the crusty crystalized deposits. The other plugs  looked to be fine.
Taking into account the strong smell of gas at the exhaust, and the fouled plug, could it be a stuck valve?

Itīs been a while since iīve been on the forum but since iīve decided not the scrap the e30...

Iīve got a few things i have to deal with on the car. One of them is that iīm getting a strong smell of gasoline from the exhaust and the car goes through some coolant.
On the thought that it might be a blown head gasket or a crack i pulled the plugs and changed the oil. The oil came out fine, there was no coolant in any of the cylinders, no bubbles from the expansion tank or oil mixed in with the coolant or pressure in the tank when cold.
If i fill up the coolant to the cold line with in a few days it drops about and inch and half and stays that way so iīm guessing i might have i leak in a line somewhere. I still want to have the engine pressure tested just to be sure.

The plugs were a normal color except for plug #1 wich came back with what look like coal like chunky black deposits on the tip. Iīm not sure what this might mean. But i also get a smell of gasoline from the exhaust when the car is running. Could it be related?

On the good side the MarkD chip which i bought 3 years ago and didnīt work on the car, now works.  Looks like it was an issue with ecu compatibility.
I changed out the ecu from my non-cat car to an ecu from an e30 with a cat. Works! As soon as i get an o2 sensor welded in iīll run the new chip permanently.

This brings me to another question regarding the airflow meter...itīs been tampered with. It was adjusted by a previous mechanic so that the car would pass emissions. He said he adjusted it so it would run lean.
Is it possible to adjust it to its factory settings?

Thanks in advance

For Sale / MarkD 93 octane chip for SALE
« on: March 25, 2011, 06:13:39 AM »
Hey all, I have a MarkD 93 octane chip for the e30 m42 for sale.

I bought this two years ago for my is and found that it didnīt work on euro spec non-cat models. I was going to change over my ecu and add an o2 sensor in order to get it to work, but iīm scrapping that plan as i am getting rid of the e30.
I am located in sunny Spain and ideally would ship only to somone in Europe (yes that includes UK residents:))

150$ U.S. and itīs yours, that includes shipping.
Payment by Paypal transfer

I will post a picture shortly, for some reason itīs not letting me upload the image. If you have any questions PM me.

Thanks!

Clunking = loose brake caliper, and the squeaking is gone too. On the negative side of things, i slammed the car into a post.

Exterior / DIY - Rebuilding the Driver's Side Door Lock
« on: December 02, 2010, 08:31:46 AM »
I have a problem with my drivers side doorlock. When i insert the key and turn it clockwise, it turns but doesnīt lock the door. It seems to catch at a certain point but then continues to turn.
When i turn it counterclockwise it opens the lock. Could this fix deal with the problem?
