Engine + Driveline / Re: Mysterious Oil Consumption ???
« on: January 20, 2015, 11:29:14 PM »
If my little M42 didnt need oil on a regular basis I would definitely worry. Seems like they have a nasty habit of eating it up. I've come to expect it. My M50 and M20 have no where near the consumption levels.

I hope you dont mind, but Ill just make a list of what I need.

That delete-cha-call it: provided it works well ;)
A working late model headlight switch/cluster dimmer
battery tie down/clamp business
Sunroof crank
Maybe a shift knob and boot it they arent expensive
You dont happen to have a non-leaking steering rack do you?

Interested in m42 parts that are in good working order...mine is on the fritz >:|

...I may think of more...

J check with Mr Vang - R3V, he might have your battery hold down

I really need that tiny belt inside the antenna, I too have two units, one is a different manufacturer so the belt doesnt swap. Any help?

let us know how this works, please, and where you found it to purchase if other than online. I'm up here in Berkeley.

so... can you explain why a it might be running too rich when the ecu should be controlling this factor? I think that would be super helpful

WTB/WTT / WTB: NorCal, Battery hold down
« on: April 16, 2013, 12:01:45 AM »
Hey guys, my crazy stiff JOM's are beatin up my battery. Anyone have a complete hold down they want to part with? I only have a threaded hole in the tray. I know what is possible because my wife's 325i has a nice one... and it works!

Engine + Driveline / Piston + Valve: How Much Damage Is Too Much?
« on: February 27, 2013, 09:53:05 AM »
I had a recent question/experience with my m20... here's the story.

Bought non-running 90 325i with what was siad to be broken TB, after diving in, found that TB was intact, but other mayhem occurred with timing components. The head was taken to a very reputable machine shop in walnut creek. all exhaust valve replaced (bent) and new guides and seals installed. Head completely checked and given clean bill.
Meanwhile I worked on the block. This is the best one.

This is the worst one.

As you can see, these were classic "interference" issues brought to life.
I posted my images and questions on R3V and spoke to the machinist and other BMW mechanics who all said...
deburr
clean throughly
dont worry

I have been daily driving this 325/M20 for 2 weeks now. It is very solid, no issues to date, runs great, passed smog, pulls very well.
Clearly, I am not a pro mechanic, nor have I worked on more than my m42 and m20. Just thought you could use a bit of perspective on your project. Glad to hear things are looking positive for you and the m42.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Someone talk me into m42!
« on: February 18, 2013, 10:02:01 AM »
I'd like to chime in on this one....
Currently own two E30's, 318is and 325i auto
The 325 is new to me and the suspension needs to be replaced, it's original.
However, based on what you said and how you like to drive, the M42 is a no-brainer. That little tank can out maneuver anything! My suspension has been modified like many out there and I still have the orig open 4:10.
Even at this level, the car feels amazing all the time. I drive very aggressively, all the time and every light and stop sign is a opportunity to hear that amazing little 4 cyl come to life.
I have never found parts hard to find and I have done a lot of work to the 318
The weight is noticeable, and don't forget that stupid trunk tar and the sound deadening under the rear seat.
I get most of my parts from pelican, and used parts are often available in Calif because of all the dorks who are getting rid of the "4 cyl" in favor of the "more powerful 6" LOL.
Last but not least, the 318is was what the germans created after 10 yrs of learning, trial and error and engineering excellence. I'd say that is one of the reliability factors summed up. It is the best of all the e30's
Let me know if you want to hear more.... I could go on all day about that engine and it's chassis package.
Get the 318!
Besides, we are a special group of E30 owners....

GLW sale or not cuz that is a beautiful beastie! Love the driveway shot with the heavy contrast. Looks like she's out to eat the road up and leave no survivors.

keflaman,

I have two bbs that you could have for freight only. Here they are:
They are from different manufacturers:

and the second.

#2 has some curb rash, but I do not think they are bent in any way. They are 14's, you didn't mention size, but i'm assuming you are going stock. I have them boxed in the boxes that my new 15" TRW motorsports came in. Such a deal. Let me know, would love to get rid of them.

I am in 94556, NorCal. I will get dims and weight of box if your game.

Steve
