How Do YOU Seal The Oil Filter Housing To The Timing Case?

The Right Stuff is made by Permatex, very cool stuff. Autozone carrys it, not too pricey. Might try this for my leak. Also the Hylomar stuff is German and available at Grainger. Not cheap but I have a business discount through my work.  They should be in the bay area.

So, I am going to hold-off on the gasket overhaul for a little bit. I finally had some time to get a good look around this weekend with a light and mechanic's mirror. Oil is weeping from everywhere, not just around the filter housing where there is high-pressure oil. Every bolt on the lower oil pan has a evidence of weepage around it, and the oil is just sitting there under vacuum / no pressure most of the time. I do think that this must be a side effect of using a new type of oil that was probably never intended for use with paper gaskets. In a thousand miles or so I will probably have leaked enough to use up my last bottle of 10W-60 and 1000 miles after that I will be about due for an oil change (debatable, since I have been adding new oil so fast it is probably still fresh haha).

My plan is to go back to the trusty Mobil 1 15W-50 stuff that I always used to run. It leaked a little too, but nothing like this. If the leakage does not improve, then I will be pulling covers and stuff and replacing paper gaskets and using The Right Stuff. It is a shame...the car seems to run super smoothly when it is cold with this 10W-60 TWS oil...but it is just too much of a messy headache. And expensive!

I just used the gasket by itself....thats how it came from the factory. Make sure there is no gasket residue or imperfections in the surfaces

Everything was immaculate. This silly new oil is just a pain. The guy in the dealer's parts department said that this stuff is notorious for making a leaky mess in any application outside of those it was intended for (new M-cars with metal gaskets and sealant). Too bad, since the car runs super smooth with it. A member on r3v and I were discussing it, and either he or a relative works for Mercedes in a position related to oil/lubrication development. I guess that this fancy oil starts breaking down after 5000 miles anyway, and the Mobil 1 15W-50 is good for 10000 miles. Lots of reasons to switch back!
