E36 M42 -> E30 retrofit questions

Hey all,

I'm thinking of buying a 1/94-onwards E36 M42 engine and retrofitting it onto the E30. I like the concept of DISA, crankcase ventilation, knock control, etc.

Given that, here are my questions:

1. To take advantage of all these high-tech (then) goodies, I need to use a '94+ ECU, correct?

2. Would anyone know the build count for E36 318is by year? Would parts be a problem since some parts only came out '94-'95?

3. How much heavier is the E36 M42 versus the E30 M42?

5. Is anyone here selling their '94-onwards M42 engine and manual tranny?

I have an M44 bottom end running the serpentine belt and stock M42 injection and head.

To get knock control and the other electronic things you suggest (including lambda feeback?) I'd suggest that you'll need the ECU to go with whatever engine you go for.

Regarding weight, the odd lb here or there but I can't see that a few more sensors and a different belt drive setup will make any significant difference. The M44s over here had a plastic dual length inlet but not sure on early E36 M42s.

Basically, if you want to go this route then I'd suggest that you get all ancillaries and engine from a wrecked car preferably (rear-end damage) and get cutting and soldering to fit the later EFI.

I found some answers so I'm updating this thread:

1. '94+ ECU is required to take advantage of the goodies. They've got EWS but that's easily defeated.
2. http://www.e38.org/BMWProductionData.pdf has data on total production for the E36 but it doesn't break it down by year. I'm guessing maybe 10,000 for MY '94-'95.
3. Whatever weight difference there is, it probably isn't as significant as using 13-lb wheels to reduce unsprung weight.
