Clutch upgrade
« on: October 07, 2009, 08:07:01 PM »
As of right now i have a spec stg3 6 puck clutch and i absolutly hate it as my car is a dd and this clutch is no fun on city roads. It will be for sale once i have a new clutch.

Im wondering what you guys are using other then the m20 clutch and flywheel option cuz from what i understand you have to change flywheel clutch and starter and i already have a aluminum flywheel and am not willing to loose that or buy another one.

Post what you guys have or have tried out.

keep in mind my car is making around 250whp and more to come.

i ran a spec stage 2 in my almost stock wrx (~230whp) it held that very easily. people who drove my car that were used to a stock wrx clutch thought it was really stiff/touchy, as did i after first installing it. But once i got used to it, it was a lot easier to manage than the stock clutch. By that i mean that it engaged exactly the same all the time, it didn't even bother me in traffic. I liked it.

I plan to run the M20 flywheel and possibly the spec stage 2 or something very similar to it on my M42.

You're on the other side of the pond right? what compression are you running? i'm thinking of using 9.0:1, same as a wrx ;) and maybe even a vf34 turbo. sry to go off topic :(

Mines 8.5:1 with t3/t4e around 13psi. it hauls ass for a 4cyl. Definatly get a diff with a low ratio like 3.25 you will not be dissapointed.

I have a 94 318is running 12psi. I was running a m3 lightweight flywheel and m3 stage 2 race clutch with my m42 tranny and it worked great. A month ago I blew up 2nd gear at the track and then a couple weeks after that broke the driveshaft in half and broke the rear diff. So I just finished swapping in a m3 zf tranny another m42 driveshaft and a 3.45 lsd, just got it back together lastnight and the car seems to be working really well.

Ok does anyone know what clutchs from other cars that will fit the m42 flywheel if there is any?

Trying to avoid having to change the flywheel.
