try a new timing chain tensioner.  they are cheap, super easy to replace, and is a maintenance part that needs to be replaced every 50k IIRC.

check Pelican Parts.  They have the part and a write-up on how to replace it.

hmmm this post was from a while ago...but did this fix your ticking? i have a new M44 tensioner on the way because mine does the same thing. when it's quiet...it's real quiet. but cold starts sound like the children of lucifer are having a party in my engine bay.

Hmm, the life expectancy of the tensioner piston is only 50k miles?  The rest of the stuff (chain & guides) are good for like 100k, right?  I replaced my piston about 52k miles ago and I also have noticed a noisy motor on cold starts within the last couple months.

Visit HERE for a plethora of 318iS stuff and some other randomness.  Would you say I have a, plethora, of pinatas?
