hey man:

I'm trying to post an update this weekend, but here's the two cents:

- the engine itself is great... the builder did a fantastic job, and they did everything they said they would do; irrespective of the performance gains, it's a very, very, very high quality build. Hopefully it will outlive me.

- for me, the car is fast; from 0-5500 rpm it's not too different than stock... from 5500 to 7600 it's a bat out of hell; terrifying. Sadly, I don't get to drive it flat out very often (traffic, speed traps, etc.). The engine was really built for Lime Rock, so I gotta get up there and work it out!

- having said that... this experience has also shown how under-rated things like gearing (and a raised rev limit) are in terms of contributing to the actual speed of the car 0-100.

In the future, I might spend less attention (and money!!) on displacement and crank HP, and more attention to gearing and final drive. For example, a close ratio transmission and a true 8000 rpm redline. stuff like that.

Naturally, the irony of ironies is that the issue of grassroots motorsports magazine with the DASC arrived the day we were wrapping up the install. The economics of that package are tough to beat, so hopefully someone here will install it and we can get a good look at what's what.

As far as the dyno... I am trying to get some time in october with Mark D. The car has basically, a stock chip with a 7600 redline. So I'll drive up there and get it on a dyno.

We g-teched the car in missouri and the quarter mile worked out to around 14.5 seconds at 97 mph (thereabouts)... so a rough estimate at the crank is something like 200hp.

Last month, Denis and I did some informal runs against a guy we know with a MKII-Vr6 golf. I think his car is a little lighter than mine, and... I personally, probably weigh more than he does :) ...but basically, over about 4 runs, it wasn't close... having owned a MkIII vr6 myself, it helped put it in perspective.

Once I get my appt. with mark D. we can start the 'actual wheel hp' office pool and see who wins.

Febi: Would you mind sharing the specs on the engine? I'd like to know what you did in terms of cyl. head/intake mani/TB work?

I bet it's awesome to drive!
