after new 7k limit, my car sounds ill

like the sickness kind of ill.  after 6700 or so the car sounds BAD. like not just noise, but bass too, if you can understand.  feels like things are not working properly.  keep in mind, this is a mysterious PO and a terrible seller. (seller didnt have car very long).  what could be wrong?  i have a feeling io just shouldnt rev past 6500, play it safe and be happy.  This was a dinan replica, and my 60-100 time went from 12.7 to 11.4.  not bad, considering i didnt rev anywhere new.  other than that, car feels great, except it still sounds like a lawnmower around 1.5-2k rpm, and now a dying lawnmower thats blades have flown off and chuinked into everything surrounding it at 7k.

ok... something is seriously up... I would definitely put the stock chip back in and see what's happening (eg, if it still does it)

and prolly, check your lower oil pan for the dreaded upper oil pan bolt loss thing.

Is it possible it is just hitting the rev limiter making it sputter and pop?

hehe i wish.  i hit the limiter on purpose in my subie for extra big flames.  this is different.

i dont see what removing the chip would do, as either way i would not be able to tell if the problem is solved. the noise is only above 6700ish.  its somethign with the engine.  i might check the oil pan,  had all the bolts removed last week but couldnt pry the pans apart, and gave up b/c once i got my suspension on, wanted to test it out.  i love the suspension btw, took a corner at 100 that i didnt think was possible... crazy stuff.

my car also makes weird noises around 1.5-2k, kind of the same problem as it sounds, but a lot harsher at the higher rpm. other than that the engine sounds good, all the way throught the rev band as long as youre WOT.  im not very smart/experience with engine internals, so i have no idea whats going on. i'll have my trusty mechanic take a look this week.

 any ideas welcome.

well..

there's a LOT of ignition timing in these chips, and depending also on the state of your fuel system (pump, pressure regulator, and injectors) it's possible to get real lean in a hurry

rattling to death sounds about right.  febi, thanks for the info... i do think i need a new fuel pump, as before my revs were cut short once or twice a hard drive (sometimes not at all) around 5500 or less or so.  i can also hear the pump buzzing with windows up and music off.

so looks like before i rev to high i need to go and replace my fuel pump and have the engine checked over for any other malfunctions.

has any ever used techron? my brother says old cars can feel a difference, after putting in a bottle of techron (like 8 bucks) in as a fuel additive.  its the same stuff all chevron gas comes with, and a lot of people say it really helps.  i might go get a bottle just cause i feel bad for pushing Bjorn so hard.

Anyone have some extra aftermarket chips they aren't using or could do without for a few days they want to send me? We did our first chip today, feels pretty good. I don't have any real intent in doing chips for standard stock cars but rather modded cars, 2.1Ls, turbo, etc. I'd still like to see how close we are to that the other companies are doing.

pissed with like, engine thumpage? hard to explain.  sounds like some heavy, irregular shaped spheres rolling down a wooden incline.

mine sounds REALLY mean past 6500k.  Its deff not a bad sound, its just a lot louder and mean as heck.  I do have a new fuel pump and fuel filter.

Maybe change your filter, they are cheap as crap, and it wouldn't hurt to change even if its not your problem.

Pull the lower pan, check for timing chain rollers.

Also you may want to check the cam sprocket teeth. It they are very sharp, they are done and will kill your timing chain, which is probably already beat to death anyhow.

I agree with the other people change the cheap stuff (fuel filter and air filter) and then see if that cures it, then go for plugs, wires, and fuel pump (basically the more expensive stuff).

Also keep in mind that unless everything is perfect, at 6700 the Hp falls off fast. Plus at those revs with a stock air box(uncut) it will actually not get enough air. Though once cut/modded, it runs lean (go figure).

Edit: Why do you guys buy these "replica chips?" I would say it's not wise to do so unless the person basically copied a Dinan chip. I personally happen to be biased towards the Mark D chip as it just works perfectly.

My motor WAILS to redline. It's the absoulte mechanical harmonious orchestra - the exhaust note and intake growl - when I take the journey to 7200rpm. I will try get another clip loaded sometime if someone is willing to host and perhaps give me tips on where to place my camera without windnoise totally messing the sound up.

yeah, sounds like i have a lot of little things to sort out.  i dont feel sketchy or bad buying an ebay copy, it is a copy of a DINAN chip.  its impossible that the guy i bought it from just amde up his own crap and sold it... its obviously a copy of something, therefore something trusted. i know DINAN isnt as good of a performance chip as the mark D, but for 40 bucks shipped....

thanks for all the ideas.
