Upper oil pan leaking-How hard is it to change the gasket?
« on: September 04, 2009, 08:22:25 AM »
I've already read most of the threads concerning this repair. The engine is losing a tablespoon of oil a day...How difficult is it to change the upper gasket out? I am most concerned about the 2 bolts closest to the transmission...Is there going to be engine damage as a result even if the oil is being replaced weekly. Thanks

It's kind of a pain in the ass, but not terribly hard.

I recommend raising the engine up for the extra clearance you need to get it off. Disconnect the motor mounts from the arms on the engine, jack underneath the edge of the transmission bellhousing (right next to the oil pan, use a piece of wood too).

Check the lower pan for cracks, it finds a lot of things along the road. And you'll want to replace that gasket too while you're at it.

Thanks..Do you think that there is any engine damage? It has been a small leak like this for over a year? Don't have time to change it right now...Can I let it go for a few months as long as I keep topping off the oil?

You should be ok if it just a leak, you will just need to keep adding oil. Hopefully you can get to it, as you might spend more on oil than the ~$10 gasket plus a morning to fix it.
