Whats it for?
« on: September 02, 2009, 06:46:04 PM »
Hey what is the switch found on the center console right above the window switch do. I think it has something to do with the windows. Is this switch needed? The reason i ask is my console is pretty beat up and I found a clean one but there is no hole for this switch. I was thinking of just leaving it underneath or should i try and cut out a hole and put it in?

Thanks in advance!        91 318is

It is the circuit breaker for the windows. If it is out and show red, the windows are disabled. It works different between 2 and 4 doors I believe, only the rears on the 4 doors, but dont quote me on it.

If it's rectangular, it's the window circuit breaker for all windows. If it's small and square, it's a kiddie switch that disables the window switches in the rear doors of a sedan. My 91 318i sedan has both.

Sometimes if used and a power surges it will trip the breaker to prevent the windows motor of burning up. Also if you have kids, it can be used as safety feature. If you want to remove it, you will probably need to keep the current running through another way.

Don't the windows have a fuse anyhow?
I found it somewhat redundant, but nice to cut power if you like.
I have had it blow fuses, but never trip the breaker (my drivers window motor is getting worn and drawing more than it should I would guess).
