My mechanic says my m42 is not worth fixing at 160k miles

i had an identical problem.  Car would not idle.  I would have to rev it at a stop to keeo it from cutting out.  Follow the link in tjts signiature.  Replace and simplify all vacuum lines under the intake manifold.  This is very cheap and easy thing to do.  There is no downside to replacing all these lines.

Dont give up on your car.  And absolutely find a new mechanic

MBryce42. I agree with what you are saying. I can do all the work myself but sometimes second guess my compitence. If you have the right tools you will be able to do it. I plan for some engine rebuilding when I get home from Fort Drum. As a matter of fact, I am seriously interested in doing a stroker kit. Like I wrote earlier I have 250k on my baby. She has taken me every where I have wanted to go, and I have done all my own work. It might seem expensive without the mechanic. Good luck. And if you stay with this forum you will notice years of experience. T.

I agree with whats all been said here. even though I had years of experience with cars, these forums were a big help
tjts1  links, as well as many others was a giant help. youll be able to find all the help you need on this and r3v
and of course a bentley manual is a big help, amazon had them for 39 bucks

as far as keepiong the engine in time or the cams aligned, you can buy the special tools or use the short cuts you can find on the forums

just go slow, take your time, be methodical, document and label things if you need, take pics to help you put things back if you need,
