interesting story with a moral
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:24:32 PM »
Interesting to me anyway. (because it's about me:p)

As you may or may not know, I saved my car from a field and a slow horrible death of lonliness and neglect a few weeks ago. I've been steadily trying to make headway with my patented 2 steps forward, one step back method where I'm responsible for breaking half of the things I fix.

In another thread you may have seen my posts about cleaning the gas tank and needing a fuel pump etc. A couple weeks ago I went to a junkyard that had advertised it had 91 318is parts on craig's list. I needed a right rear window which he gave to me for 35 bucks. I asked him how much the fuel pump was and he quoted me 50 bucks.

Not knowing this guy or the condition of the pump and being pressed for time I opted to pass even though I got this story about how the car was a buddy of his and it was running the day he towed it to the yard.

I have my car at freinds shop who also tows as his main line of work. He tows for local race tracks ad at Indy for all of the big races. He's there this weekend and I get to "wacth the store", aka use the rack all weekend. Well when I brought the window up he asked where I got it and wouldn't you know Doug (my friend) and Kevin ( the guy that runs the other yard) are good buddies. Kevin drives at the local race tracks and Doug tows.

So knowing there is a history and I can trust this guy, I go back for the fuel pump and some asoorted other items I would figure totaled about 30-40 dollars. I take out the pump and it still has pressure in the lines. Good sign. when I take out the pump there sits a full tank of premium.

I needed the connector pipe that connects the two halves of the gas tanks because I butchered mine taking it off (one step back) and not wanting to waste all of that gas I went and asked Kevin if he had a hose and some cans. I was able to get around 9 gallons out. When I got the connector off none came out so I figure I got most of it out.

The moral of the story is that because I was considerate enough to save 30 dollars worth of gas for him, he gave me the rest of the items I had collected. Right kick panel, glove box latch, tie rod/rack boot(new), owners manual, drivers side dome light, and the gas tank connector pipe in excelent condition.

had there been no connection and I wanted the pump badly enough to take a chance, I would have done the same thing. So when you're out there taking parts off, think of the next guy and think of the guy you will be paying. if you have the opportunity to do him a favor he may do you one in return.

well it's up in the air now. At least enough to get to the diff. I had to jack it up and put some blocks under it so I could get the gas tank connector off of it. That diff looked a LOT beefier than mine. Maybe it was the heat and the threat of spiders, but when I saw it I started wondering what I had.

That car also has a reinforcement in the right rear seat wall that my car does not have. I thought that was a strange mid year change to make.

There were a alot of parts I should have snagged but didn't have the cash and only brought the tools I needed. He's got a set of forks, but I don't know hime well enough personally to ask him to get it out and lift the car.
