1995 318i.    282 DME

New engine in. No more black plugs or black O2, no smoke. Engine runs strong, doesnt want to idle all the time, jumps back and forth form 800-500. Not the ICV, Ive confirmed this.

I use to just get a 1222 and a 1226 code. Now I get a 1215,1222,1223,1224,and the 1226. What has me puzzled is that I cant clear them now, my car wont let me.

Does this sound like a DME problem? And can I swap to any DME outta the 92-95 M42? I always see things about the 990...

Check out this link before swapping in engine ecu's.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E36-DME-Repair/E36-DME-Repair.htm

Then look at the DME swapping table down the bottom of the page

I checked out the link, figures I need an odd one. Can anybody explain to me what the different colors of the labels mean? Theres a silver 282 on ebay, but I have a green label.

dunno about the codes, as I haven't looked them up, but you said that idle is jumping around. I just finished tracking down a vacuum leak on my F150, and it grew worse. landed up being that one of the hoses coming from the valve cover to the rubber intake hose/neck had a loose nub that it fit into. and the elbow I replace, which had a small hole it in (which was the cause for me lean codes), wasn't exactly tight. so I used zip ties on both of them. sealed up the leaks, and now it's running great again.

maybe your loopy idle is a vacuum leak?
vacuum leaks cause all kinds of error codes to register.

For a little update, I stuck a vacuum gauge on it and it holds steady around 18Hg in, except for when the idle would drop the vacuum would drop along with it down to 5 Hg in, but this was only when the engine would stumble down around 500.

Then I took out the electric valve, vacuum canister. I just ran a line from the black/white one way valve to the vacuum box thats bolted on the lower plenum. This seemed to make the car run better for awhile but the problem continued. Then I swapped those parts for the ones that came on the new engine, and the purge valve, but the problem still continued.

All along I have not been able to clear my codes either, my computer wouldnt let me, nor did unhooking the battery over night clear them.

Then I swapped out my chip for the stock one and I was able to clear my codes and it idles a lot better. Once I put the chip a month ago I never cleared the codes because I new my engine was done for anyways. I cleared the codes and now only the original 1222 code pops up again but it got rid of the 1215,1223,1224, and 1226. I ordered a new O2 sensor again hoping maybe from driving my car for so long fouling 2 sets of plugs and constantly blackening the O2 sensor for 3 months might have killed it.
