Author Topic: HELP! Can't get drive shaft out!! (Read 2372 times)

Car is in the air, allthe bolts are undone, but the drive shaft, she no come out. I see splines at the guibo and it looks like the rear shaft it supposed to slide but its not. ALso the front of the rear drive shaft has a threaded collar were it connects to the splined part of the front.

How do I get this thing out? I'm working against the clock and need help.

Did you mark the position of how the tailshaft bolts up to its original spots? This is important. Both at the guibo end and the differential end.

Then unbolt the tailshaft at the differential end. Unbolt at the guibo end. Then you need to unbolt the center bearing from the chassis. (Ensure you remember or mark the pre-load on this bearing so you can reset it the same later). Then the tailshaft should drop out.

Do not remove the threaded collar or the tailshaft will seperate into 2-pieces.

I did all of that except mark it (thanks I'll go do that) but that was where I was stuck when I posted. Nothing is dropping out.

Do I need to take the front section of the exhaust off? It looks like that is the only way I can get enough clearance.

Well I just made myself a big old bunch of work.

Gave up last night and came home and RTFM'd the manual and saw that yes I had to take the front section of the exhaust off to get the driveshaft out. Broke three of the four studs in the exhaust manifold doing it.

So, the driveshaft it out and the gas tank is out and home in my back yard and I'm getting ready to start the cleaning proceedure. Should be interesting.

Doh! You need to drop the pipe off from the junction back, but you should be able to wrangle enough room to pull the driveshaft without taking the front section off. Next time.

That just would not work for me. I had the aft section of the exhaust off but I could not get the drive shaft out. Believe me, pulling the front section of the exhaust was the last thing I wanted to do because I knew I would break studs. I tried for an out to finess, yank, pry and nothing would work. At least I was smart enough to tie the drive shaft up because when I broke that last stud it came right out

Oil well, it's done now. I just have to remember to take the drill with me this weekend so I can get the broken studs out.
