Yet Another Turbo Build Thread (Semi Budget, lots o pictars)

Update:  Haven't upped to 10psi just yet.  I am working on getting the ICV to control idle nicely.  Making slow progress, hence the lack of updates.  As of now I can get i to idle @ ~1050 +/- 100 with the AC on or off... but i can not just turn the AC on from a dead idle.  I have to give it a bit of throttle and then let it settle back down.  After that it is driveable with the AC on.

Here are some pics of the IAT sensor installed/mounted.  And also some pics of my MS with her skirt up.

Pay no attention to the MS paint yellow lines.  I put those there when I was trying to trace  down a problem with my tach not getting a signal.  Fixed that problem... no back on to the idle.  Been working on this for 2 days now :(

Got a semi warm start for you guys to check out.  Shows how everything is routed and running as well.  I need to get some sort of in car mount for driving vids.  Let me know what you think.  I have since tuned the PWM idle control a bit so I have a much better start and idle, but I thought you guys would want to check out the vid just the same.

Made HUGE leaps forward after taking the vid... will hopefully have driving vids soon.  Need to make a camera mount.

I am using volvo 29.5lb/hr injectors and some crappy autolite plugs gapped to .032.  I think I need to gap them closer though... anyone know for sure?

I had mine gapped at .028 IIRC.

I also had NGKs that were one step colder than stock.

I have a PM in to Todd... but no response as of yet.  Want to get a set of those plugs now that it is pretty close to tuned and I won't have to worry about fouling anymore.

It's getting more fun to drive with every tune... I'm in San Antonio.  But I go to Houston and Dallas a few times a year as well for different reasons, sometimes car shows, friends, etc.

EDIT:  Did some aesthetic mods... I think it looks alot better.  When the turbo and other parts come off for coating, I am going to do the cam cover in black crinkle coat.  Should looks quite nice I think.

Took the hot side of turbo, the turbo manifold, and the downpipe to get hot coated yesterday.  Can't wait to get them back so I can put my hood on.  It got so hot under there I didn't want to put the hood on even though Danny said he had no issues.

Did LOTS of work in prep for the car show this Sunday.  The wife was kind enough to detail the engine bay for me, and I touched up the paint in areas that were too worn.  Made a couple of fiberglass gauge holders.  The top one I wanted angled more towards the driver for easier reading, and the bottom one I wanted something that looked less ricer than the pillar pod that I had before.  Also rewired my Efan and rear flashing LEDs to the two rocker switches on the bottom panel.  Now I can turn on my efan even when the car is off... big help with the turbo.

On to the pictars... I wish I had another fabric to cover the fiberglass panels in, but for now speaker box carpet will have to do.  It looks pretty good actually, but will be replaced later with something a bit more OEM looking if possible.

And lastly the new fuse box cover label I picked up here in the group buy section.  Looks great, and couldn't be happier with it.

DONE!!!  Just have to put the hood back on and work another solution for the wastegate actuator.  The guy had it ghetto rigged on there and it broke finally.  Going to have some mounts welded on to mount it properly.

Heat coating color is a little iffy... but hey I can definitely live with it if it reduces underhood heat.  Everything went back together fairly well, though the turbo manifold bolts are a PITA to reach and torque down.

I even managed to reuse the stock under engine tray/shield/splashguard.  Very happy with it, now I can concentrate on getting the tune dialed in.  Dyno time will be forthcoming... probably in Houston though as I'm not sure I trust anyone here with the megasquirt.  We'll see, I might just not know the right guys.

Well... she is DONE!!! And the totals are in... GRAND total = $2147.23.  Like I said, "semi budget."  I knew I was going to spend extra money like the hot coatings and stuff like that to make it a clean and "kit" looking install.  I hope I accomplished that.

Though I did get a great deal on the BIG dollar main components, it's the little things that add up very quickly. I still think that dollar/hp ratio is pretty good and if I get 200rwhp out of it I will be 10000000% satisfied. If you were to buy a complete turbo kit with manifold, engine management, turbo, tune, every line/fitting/gauge, etc... it would easily run $4000+ so I think I still made out pretty well.  Also sold my reground cams and chip for $200 so that helped offset costs a little.

Here is EVERYTHING that was purchased including tools that I didn't have/couldn't find but needed:

Turbo (Mitsu Starion) w/ Internal Wastegate and Actuator
Manifold
AEM UEGO Wideband Controller
VDO Boost Gauge
Air Intake Temp Sensor
Plug n Play Megasquirt
Oil Feed Line
Oil Pan w/ Turbo Drain Tapped
Silicon Intake Elbow
Valve Cover Gasket
Oil Pan Gasket
Oil Filter
Hot Coating for hot side of turbo, manifold, and downpipe
10" Electric Fan to replace stock AUX fan for AC
Custom A/C low side line to fit around turbo
Custom oil line with T fitting
Refrigerant (frion)
Misc Bolts
Blow off Valve
Intercooler
Intercooler Piping Kit
Rewelding of Turbo Manifold
Custom exhaust (2.5" Downpipe to 3" from back of motor to muffler)
Serial Cable (for Megasquirt)
3 Circuit Harness (for wiring of 10" fan)
Rubber reducers (only 1)
Snap Ring Pliers Set
Downpipe Flange
Oil
Paint
Gasket Scraper
Breather for ICV
Rocker Switch for hardwiring main Efan
Vacuum T's, Splices, and Hosing
Spark Plugs & Gapper
Electric Oil Pressure Gauge
Motor Honey
Magnetic P/U Tool

Congrats on the turbo build. I like this and it's got me thinking about just slapping on a turbo on a stock engine and modified chip. I guess it's the best bang for the buck out there if you have a good engine to start with.
