hey man... there are a couple of options re: the ellipsoidal headlight install. Our cars have hella 3 prong plugs that are wired for sealed beam headlights.
The sealed beam setup has a dual element H4 lamp in the low beam... eg, it's like two bulbs in one. That's why our lowbeams fixtures stay lit when the high beams are on.
The ellipsoids from the 89 are most likely US DOT spec 9006/9005 lamps. If you wanna go through the bother, make a connector like this:
3-prong male hella (goes into the stock plug) -> two prong female 9006/9005 plugs.
On the low beams there are three wires, brown (ground), yellow (low beam), and white (positive from high beam side). In your case, for the lows, just wire the brown and yellow wire into the 9006 plug.
On the high beams, wire the ground and both white wires (one will be unused, but see my note below) into the 9005 plug.
You will be all set, except (this is normal), when your high beams come on, your low beams will go off.
Final notes:
- if you ever decide to run euro ellipsoids with city lights, you can use the return wire (unused wire in the low beams) to power your city lights;
- all the wiring and stuff... get it at
http://rallylights.com - I recommend 3 prong hella plugs (4) with pigtails and 9005/9006 plugs with the crimp connectors.
It will be a nice clean install that way.
