The problem seems to be from the engine, when idling she sounds fine as it should be but when reving the car between 2 to 3rpm she stars to make a rattling/knocking noise however after 4rpm the noise goes away and the engine sounds smooth. This seems to me as if though the chain is loose and hitting something (chain case rail). The noise is coming from the front of the rocker cover and travels along side the camshafts.

I have been told from local garages that the timing chain a tensioner needs to be changed.

You should state how many miles or kilometers you have so it would be easier to diagnose. If I were you I'd change the tensioner and see if that helps. You should also remove your lower oil pan and check for loose bolts or broken bits of plastic or pieces of the timing chain.Report back your findings..........

It has 165k on the clock.... i opend the lower sump and draind all the oil out i found a coupple of pices of hard plastic.... i presume this could be from the chain rail gards.

When i took the rocker cover off to check the chain....it felt loose from side to side and up and down. I'm not sure if it should have this much play init but didnt look good at all.

i have orderd from BMW a new chain and tensioner and new chain rail gards. hopefully this should fix the problem.

could there be anything else that i should look out for ??
and
at this stage should i change anything else while i am at it ??

If your going to install a chain then you probably should change out everything that has to do with timing components.
Cam gears ,timing chain rails ,and seals to name a few items.

I believe the timing components should be changed around 100K miles .I think I have 200K on mine and it makes quite a bit of noise like yours and I will be replacing the timing components in the near future.If the cam gears are pointy then they are worn out.

You should pull the chain cover off (the upper one at the very least) and take a look at everything in there, particularly the cam sprockets and guide rails. I'd also make sure the lower gears are in good shape as well. Mileage is not bad, but if it hasn't been done yet, you may need to consider all new gears.

The cams seem fine however i have also orderd both the lower 2 and upper to sprockets/gearing and cam cover gaskets
